I'm about to graduate with a BA in Business Administration from Saint Leo University and I've been looking into pursuing an online degree in CIS from a local school.

Has anyone here enrolled in BU Online? I'm leaning toward their MSCIS. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

BU is a very well respected school. Pretty expensive too.

I investigated BU a few years ago. At that time, their online division was run separately; no tenured faculty, courses taught exclusively by adjuncts, etc. etc.

For what they're charging, I would want exactly what the B&M students are getting.

    Great school, great program

I attend Spr. semester 2006 and completed 2 courses that term. It was taught by the same professors that teach on-ground classes.

One of the main things, to me, that is desirable in the program is that the courses are taught consecutively; meaning that the semester is broken into two parts, with one course lasting 7-8 weeks, then the next course for 7-8 weeks.

The cost is high, but you do get the quality for the price. I'm taking one course this summer, another in the Fall, then hopping back into 2 per semester until I'm finished next year.

Boston University (BU) is not that expensive when compared to the for-profit nature of other online colleges. In fact, the value of the degree itself from one of the most reputable schools in the country is worth the extra dollars, as it will pay great dividends down the road - granted you want to take advantage of such dividends.

The programs are taught by traditional campus faculty.

Of course, I may be bias, but I am also a satisfied alumni with great job offers during these hard economic times and much better odds of getting into PhD programs of my choosing.

In the CJ arena, BU is incredibly expensive when compared to other DL programs that are far more prestigious as far as CJ is concerned (Michigan State, Florida State, etc.).

The main problem with BU's CJ Master's program is that BU doesn't have a Criminal Justice department; the program is housed within the Metropolitan College (Continuing Education) and they conduct no hard research. The BU name may grab someone's attention, but if they look more carefully into the actual program, I think the luster may wear off rather quickly.

I applied to and was accepted by the BU program, back before it was available online, but decided to go with UMass-Lowell, which is rated higher within the CJ world and is also a lot cheaper than BU (especially cheap for me with the veteran's discount).

As with anything else, you mileage may vary.

I agree with many of your points, but I do appreciate what the education at BU has given me. As for the CJ program there, it is highly regarded in both academics and employment opportunities (in my opinion).

Michigan State or University of Cincinnati would have been my first choice, and they were up on the table since I got in to those schools. However I chose BU based on personal experiences, the name, and the time frame needed to complete the degree.

As for University of Massachusetts, I highly recommend it to my blog readers and anyone that asks. Kudos to you for picking a great educational institution
