I have been enamored with this since it came out (it's on Netflix.) I don't care for Burnham's other work but this captures something special. The experience of living through the pandemic as a Millennial and Gen Z-er and the march of capitalism. Billionaire worship and oscillating mental health. It's a work of art. Anyone else seen it, thoughts?
Never heard of him. Just watched the trailer. Still have no idea what it is... other than it saying musical comedy.
It is indeed hard to explain. His past work isn't really representative (I'd never heard of him either and didn't like what I watched), and the trailer has little actual material. It's kind of like a one-man sketch comedy. He performs some songs, but in between he talks about different topics and they provide shots of his declining mental health (or him acting as such, at least) and video of him actually setting up and preparing to do the various videos. The first 10 minutes are pretty representative of the whole special (the second song, "Comedy", was nominated for 6 Emmys), so if you give that a try and don't care for it I wouldn't watch the rest, but I loved it.
Watched it, Er fast forwarded a bit through it. Can certainly see how it may have won art house awards, but just not my cup of tea.
