It's important to remember that Athabasca's 100% transfer credit policy only applies to its 3-year (90 credit) BGS program. The rest of Athabasca's programs require 25% or more of the program's coursework be undertaken at Athabasca.

Athabasca's 100% transfer credit policy do you know how many Upper Divison credits they require. The website says 30, but another page had 21. Plus it said you had to complete 30 credits from them?

The BGS degree through Athabasca U., requires 45 UL (or in Athabasca parlance "Senior level" - i.e. 300 and 400 level) credits. There is NO residency requirement for this degree.

I'm including below an e-mail that I sent to Athabasca regarding the BGS and the reply. Note that the $884 tuition per course is in Canadian dollars. At the current exchange rate that equals about $750 US Dollars. Hope this helps.

    Good luck!

    Hello Thomas,

Thank you for your inquiry. Students could technically transfer in all 90
credits required for the Bachelor of General Studies. It would cost the
student in this scenario $65 to apply and $200 to request an official
    evaluation.
In order to determine how many of your previous credits will transfer into
a program of study here you must submit transcripts and go through the
    formal evaluation process.
    1. Submit a $200 evaluation fee and official, sealed transcripts for
evaluation. It will take a minimum of 8 - 12 weeks for you to get the
results of this evaluation back. Once you successfully complete 6 credits
with Athabasca University your third course registration fee will be
    reduced by $145.
Transcripts should be sent directly to:
    Athabasca University
    Attn: Admissions
    1 University Drive
    Athabasca, AB
    T9S 3A3

Athabasca University offers year round enrollment and course registration.
Courses begin the first of every month, year round with registration
deadlines the 10th of the previous month. Students can study on a part
time or full time basis taking one course at a time or a maximum of 6
courses at one time. Students are given a maximum of 6 months to complete
each 3 credit course, however, within that 6 months you work at your own
pace and are free to finish up as quickly as you like. There is no time
limit for completion of the degree. There is no minimum time to complete a
    course.

We do accept some CLEP credits toward this degree. They would need to be
officially evaluated by the faculty and detailed course outlines would be
required. Again, an official evaluation of your university credits would
be required. If you want more information on that specific question you
may need to contact the Evaluation department at [email protected]

Tuition is $884 per three credit course for American students. This fee
includes learning resources, tutor support and all applicable taxes. Fees
are payable on a course by course basis as you wish to register.

    Sincerely,

    Diana XXXXX

Hi,I live in the US. I was hoping that you could answer my questions
regarding the online BGS program. 1. How much does this program cost if I
transfer in all of the credits from another institution? 2. Do you accept
CLEP exams as credit towards the BGS degree? If so, how many and are there
any restrictions on what CLEP exams you accept (e.g. general, subject)?3.
Is there a set minimum amount of time that a student has to complete a
course?4. I am currently attending Drexel University in Pennsylvania. The
3 quarter credit courses that I am now taking would convert to 2 semester
hours. How do you treat credit transfers from a school that operates on a
Quarter Credit system? 5. How much is tuition (per 3-credit course) for US
    students?Thank you,Thomas XXXXXXX

45 Upper Division credits seems excessive….

Athabasca University reduces the number of preparatory-level (100 series) and junior-level (200 series) credits required for the BGS degree. This has the effect of making the 45 credit hours at the senior-level (300 and 400 series) seem disproportional. The BGS is intended as a terminal degree for most people since entry to a graduate degree usually requires 120 credit hours not the 90 credit hours earned by the BGS.

Does Excelsior or TESC do a general studies degree the way that COSC does?

And does Athabasca U take certificatoins like Cisco and Microsoft the way the big three does?

I'm not sure but I think Empire State may be one of them. I'll double check and confirm or deny.

Excelsior and TESC grant degrees in the major.

I recall reading that Athabasca will accept certification credit, but you'll need to check with them. Worst case, send it to a credit bank, then pop it on over to Athabasca.

From what I understand, Athabasca will accept an associates degree in transfer. Does that mean that only 30 UD credits would be needed? If that is the case, I may consider Athabasca as I have 15 UD credits.

I think you'd still need 45, but if you already have 15 then you'd need 30 more credits either way. You should ask them, though.

    Bump

Has anyone here had success transferring CLEP or DANTES exams into the Athabasca 3-year BGS? I'm especially curious about upper level credit for DANTES exams like Civil War, Drug and Alcohol, etc.

    Thanks in advance.

FYI, don't tell them that you have a bachelors degree - deal buster! (SAME GOES FOR THE OTHER TWO) 2 Cents: It's all about timing

    Thanks for the heads up!

I was actually looking into it for my husband. He is looking for a terminal bachelor's degree without residency restrictions. He has almost enough upper level engineering credits and other 200 level courses for a BGS degree with Athabasca.

We looked into the other Big 3 possibilities, but they would require a lot more arts and science courses from him. TESC was also less than generous and less than logical with some of his course transfers in their evaluation. It was like they didn't even read the course descriptions and assigned credit solely by the course titles...

    My 2 cents:

Start with CREDIT BANKING at Excelsior College, formerly Regents College
Then look for the best fit (Only after CREDIT BANKING) These guys will drive you crazy if you try draft out your own proposal (mission impossible)

BTW, I hold degrees from both USNY/Excelsior & TESC (Yes - I got the timing right)

*Athabasca University - I do not know the process with them.

Athabasca University is a good brick-and-mortar school and has a long history in distance education. You have probably already printed the BGS degree plan worksheet and mapped the courses to the plan.

Actually, the system automatically assigns courses to the various slots in the academic evaluation. At least, that is what I was told by an adviser at TESC. I had the adviser manually override a couple course mappings.

Excelsior's BS/BA in Liberal Studies Option does not require a major (although it requires two 12-unit areas of concentration). See page 25 of their School of Liberal Arts catalog. So this degree is essentially a general studies degre.
