Both are part of the UMass system, as you know. The Amherst campus is the larger "flagship" campus of the system and as such it has associated with it a whole range of programs including everything from poetry to physics. The Lowell campus is a bit smaller and is most closely associated with engineering programs. Both programs have very good reputations. Bruce knows more about the Lowell campus and perhaps he'll add a few thoughts.

I always find it interesting that we have discussions about "which school has a better reputation?" The reality is that when looking for work, unless you are seeking jobs in the top 1-2% of the workworld, where you got the degree doesn't matter. Most employers first consider whether you have a degree or not, and if they are remotely sophisticated they will want to know if it was from a legitimate school. More often than not the employer will be looking at what you as an individual bring to the table. What are your skills, what are your references, what its your reputation? Obviously there are some exceptions to this, but I think this may be the dominant truth. Having the degree, not where you got it from matters. I also think the longer you are professionally active, the less important the school becomes. I think factors such as time, cost, access may ultimately be more important. Earning a legitmate degree from a more convenient, afforable school sooner, may be more important that delaying opportunity for a "more prestigious school." Ok, enough ranting...just a thought (smile).

As Jack mentioned, Amherst is the flagship campus, and is usually what is meant when referring to simply the University of Massachusetts. The Lowell campus started off as Lowell State College, then the University of Lowell, now UMass-Lowell. The campus is not nearly the size of Amherst, and looks like they dumped it right into the middle of a seedy neighborhood of a very poor city. I only visited the campus twice, once to register my Veteran's paperwork, the second to pick-up my diploma. I'm not in a huge rush to return.

Except for some highly technical subjects like plastics engineering, Amherst definitely has a better overall reputation than Lowell.
