Associate in Arts... Associate of Arts??

Who is ready for Maniac Craniac's next nit-picky useless thread?

So, now that I have my diploma, I realize that my degree is not an "of" but an "in." I understand that this makes absolutely no difference at all, but I'm wondering why Excelsior would use slightly different nomenclature than the vast majority of other colleges. A net search turns up a very small amount of colleges that offer an Associate "in" Arts, and there doesn't seem to be a college in the entire world that offers a Bachelor "in" Arts or Science... so what gives?

The reason why this is on my mind is because that would make my degree an "Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts." Two "ins" just sounds strange, whereas "of" just sounds nicer to me.

By now, I know that most of you regret opening this thread, so I will reward you with this:

No regrets, I'm with you. That's weird, and seemingly weird for no reason.

I googled 'Associate in Arts degree' and up came several universities that use this title. Once you get your Bachelor in Arts in Liberal Studies you can forget about your AA.

I have seen it both ways. The wording "in" vs. "of" is completely up to the institution.

So Excelsior offers the degrees of "Associate in Arts" and "Associate in Science", but also "Bachelor of Arts" and "Bachelor of Science". Whatever.

Excelsior also offers a "BPS in Technology Management". BPS stands for "Bachelor in Professional Studies" in the headline at the top of the page, and "Bachelor of Professional Studies" a few sentences later.

I'm not surprised. I have noticed in my short relationship with the school that they are consistently inconsistent. The only two things that Exelsior can guarantee you when you enroll are fees and typos.

But "in" is grammatical...tsk, and to think you hold a degree, too...

    Hey M.C.,

My two-cents worth, maybe it is an Associate in Science versus a Bachelor of Science because there aren't any majors or concentrations at the Associate level?

Yeah, Associate in Arts does sound a bit weird. I much prefer Associate of Arts.

Wow! As a degree holder of both "types" -- Associate in Arts from City Colleges of Chicago (not in my sig) and Associate of Arts in Foreign Language from ACC -- I've never really considered this topic. As a matter of fact, I dug out the diplomas to check the wording.

    Me!Me!ME!!!

I agree that is sounds strange.

    Yes!! Totally worthwhile!! Thank you.

O.K., I think there isn't much you can do right now... apart from...

    Maybe a little artistic talent and a bottle of ... White-Out? :aargh4:

At least when you get your Bachelor's degree, it will trump the Associates, so it should matter less. :eek13: Right?

It's a secret. :shhh: If we told you, we'd have to...

ah, nah, that's not true. can't really be that mean...:pirate:

When you post your reply, choose 'advanced' - then below the icons on the right, there is a little link 'More.' That'll get you a whole bunch more to choose from, including the certain-to-cheer-up-everyone (except if you're Peter in Family Guy, of course), Dancing Banana.
