Haven't been visiting this forum for a long time, I am an online Adjunct Instructor, doing Aspen Ed.D, just thinking will it help me secure better prospects for my Adjunct position?

State universities do not recognize DETC doctorates for teaching purposes. However, a DETC doctorate can be used to teach in DETC programs.

I'm not sure that's true in all states, particularly since there are a number of public universities that are members of HETA.

Can you please give an example of a state university that will accept a DETC doctorate for teaching?

If someone wants to get a doctorate to enter RA academia to teach, it would be a travesty to direct them to a DETC doctorate.

I have worked at several online institutions as an adjunct and most of them offered additional pay for the completion of a Doctoral degree. However, in every instance the Doctoral degree had to be earned through a Regionally-accredited school. I am not sure of what differences exist between the hiring and internal advancement processes at these schools, but I cannot imagine that RA would be a standard for internal advancement, but then a non-RA degree would be OK in the hiring process. I would only think that this would be an issue for positions that require a Doctorate, but why would you complete one if you could not use for your main intended purpose?

If you want to be more competitive at an RA schooll, and RA doctine would be better/best.

If your goal is to get more adjunct work, I don't see how spending an extra $15K-$20K on a DETC doctorate will help.

Truckie270 had a great post about going for additional classes in a specialized and in demand field verses going for a doctorate, and that was for a regionally accredited doctorate. A DETC doctorate would hold much less weight. I just do not see the value at all.

My personal opinion is to either use that money to take classes in a specialized, and in demand field, OR to get a second masters in an in demand field. With the amount that you would pay for an Aspen EdD, there are SEVERAL masters programs covering in demand fields that you could pursue.

Off the top of my head, looking at your MBA, -perhaps you could get a masters in accountancy or finance and teach those subjects. Also, I notice you have an engineering bachelors and a masters in signal processing. Perhaps a graduate certificate or another masters in a computer science/IT related field would be a better choice.

I second this opinion, a graduate certificate would more than beneficial than a EdD from Aspen if your goal is to get more adjunct work.

The EdD from Aspen might work for those interested in administration for CCs or K12 schools or to become a trainer in the corporate world.

As I said, look at the HETA members. They're supposed to be blind to RA-vs-NA, that's what HETA membership means. Is it true in practice? That I don't know, and wouldn't be surprised if it's largely untested.

I agree, and wasn't suggesting otherwise. I was only expressing uncertainty about your blanket statement.

Are you saying that RA state universities who are HETA members are required to accept DETC doctorates for teaching purposes?

While looking into the subject of DETC utility, I came across an amazing web site. See Boardreader for more:

Required? No. But they've agreed not to discriminate against nationally schools in general, so I'd expect that someone holding a doctorate from one would at least be able to be considered if he or she is otherwise a strong candidate.

To be fair, he's self-employed. He could list a Columbia State degree on his website, and almost no one but us education geeks would be the wiser.

Note that I'm NOT saying that Aspen is anything like Columbia State, just that I could start a website called "Bruce Tait Marketing" and list whatever I wanted to in my biography.
