When I studied medical ethics (a subject I would end up teaching to my MA in Counseling students), one of the things I was taught by a wise physician was that, even if a patient was known to have a terminal condition, you could not tell when that patient would die until the prognosis was down to "hours or days."

I'm beginning to think that, with regard to Argosy, we are quickly approaching the point of being down to hours or days.

We have definitely moved beyond incompetence to intentional deception, theft, and fraud. I can't imagine the choice will be left up to them for long. While it stinks for the students all around, I saw in the article that the government is doing loan forgiveness for the latest semester related to this fraud. So now taxpayers are on the hook for the funds that have been stolen, accountability will be had.

Argosy had a long history, and for most of it they had their ducks approximately in the row. But this is the end of the line.

I thought you're exaggerating their issues before. You were not.

It DOES look like we're at around "weeks" point right now. Could be "hours or days" before anyone knows it.

Well, it seems that we have passed the point of weeks and days, and are at the point of hours.

A myriad of newspapers are predicting that Argosy will shut down today, Friday 3/8/18. They include:

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/07/business/argosy-college-art-insititutes-south-university.html

    https://www.ajc.com/news/local-education/students-search-for-answers-for-profit-school-likely-close/vdoYaA0PVG9M3YK4qSEghO/

    https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-argosy-university-chicago-could-close-friday-20190307-story.html

And a slew of other newspapers:

    https://news.google.com/stories/CAAqOQgKIjNDQklTSURvSmMzUnZjbmt0TXpZd1NoTUtFUWlaMXNMWGpZQU1FVk5mYWtXemtfRVJLQUFQAQ?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

I gave up television when I decided to go over the road a dozen or so years ago. Never missed it, And now, I miss it even less, with the amount of entertainment Argosy is providing. I'm sure their students view the whole sordid affair as tragic, but to me it's one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time. It's also reinforced the conviction I've long held: All for-profits should be avoided like the plague.

”It is devastating. I cried all night.” I am trying to paraphrase a student at Argosy. I think we have seen enough to start encouraging students to avoid for-profit institutions. Lives are being destroyed.

    =
Also, we should start paying close attention to those fake non-profits which are funnelling excess cash to their non-arm-length management company. We know it is a financial Sleight of hand.

I think many of us already encourage avoiding for-profits. There are a reason for-profits are alluring, beyond advertising, and it then becomes a personal choice if those benefits outweigh the risks.

The first wolves have shown up to “welcome” transfer students from Argosy, If you do a Google search on Argosy University, the first two hits you get are:

    https://degrees.claremontlincoln.edu/argosy-university-students?source_channel=PPC&source_vendor=Bing&utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=Argosy&msclkid=47c63b7f97fa1df5d69b67fd129a7f88

    https://info.pathways.hodges.edu/acton/fs/blocks/showLandingPage/a/39180/p/p-0011/t/page/fm/0?msclkid=af13dac619e719e138a386449c81a4c8

Now, kiddies, our lesson for today in discernment . . .

Here are the opening sentences about these two schools from their Wikipedia articles:
    • "Claremont Lincoln University (CLU) is non-profit, regionally accredited online graduate university offering master's degrees in Social Impact, Interfaith Action and Organizational Leadership with concentrations in Civic Engagement, Ethics, Healthcare and Human Resources. "
    • "Hodges University (formerly International College), is a private university in Naples, Florida. Founded in 1990 as International College, it was renamed Hodges University in 2007. The Fort Myers campus opened in 1992."
And now, today’s lesson: When you look up a school’s Wiki, the first thing you should look for is whether the school is for profit or non-profit. Claremont, which comes from a legitimate pedigree via the Claremont School of Theology, is identified as non-profit right in the first sentence. (Of course, it is also identified as an online university, my favorite oxymoron, which IMO puts it in the bullshit category although it has RA.)

Now, do you see something missing from the Hodges Wiki? It’s simply identified as a “private university” with no mention of whether it’s for profit or non-profit.

I’m sure that one can look up corporate records for a school like Hodges to determine its profit status, but I, for one, have better things to do with my precious time. So here’s my new principle: If a school’s profit status is not identified in the first paragraph of its Wiki, write it off. Drop it like a hot potato and move on. Do not assume anything about its status one way or the other – that’s how you make stupid mistakes. But note that they are not being up front about their status and kick their butts off into the sunset.

You can American National University to the list of Wolves. Just saw an ad from them on my FB timeline welcoming Argosy students.

Also, Hodges is a non-profit. U.S. news rankings usually list proprietary school of they are for-profit. I checks SACSCOC and they are listed as a non-profit.

    Argosy Tampa Closes...

Argosy University in Tampa, which is owned by Dream Center Education Holdings, closed its doors Friday along with 22 other campuses across the nation after the Department of Education accused the institution of misspending.

On March 6, Mark Dottore, the receiver for Argosy University and Dream Center Education Holdings LLC filed a motion asking to sell, transition or close campuses and art institute campuses stating "the receiver does not have funding to continue to operate the campuses."

Not that it was that difficult to see but we saw that coming. How many campuses remain open?

There is nothing wrong with online courses from a brick and mortar university, but Steve is right. If it is an online university, run far away! As he has often said, if it is not RA, it has minimal if any value. I largely agree for-profit's should be avoided unless there are very special circumstances and the individual has a deep understanding of issues. Sometimes for profit might be good, e.g. DigiPen, if they fill a special niche, although I doubt very much they have any online offerings.

I am not sure I have seen this explicitly stated, but my impression is all will closing except for some Art Institutes that were purchased in January.
