My relative is in the final stages of completing technical training classes for a professional certificate on Coursera that comes with ACE credit recommendation of 12 Associate degree level credits.
What are his chances to transfer or being granted the credit by his community college where he completed some classes toward AS degree?
The training he took is obviously to be used to improve his chances with employment but the young man also working on his AS degree slowly for a few years now.
Anybody had experience transferring ACE recommended credit in to a community college?

He scheduled a call with his college advisor as well.

    Thanks,

ACE has been making credit recommendations for decades. I doubt that they do it in futility.

That said, it is best to ask the potential recipient of those recommendations, the school in question. It's not just a question of acceptability, but also one of applicability.

    Thank you for your reply.

I read and heard in the past that ACE credit recommendations been useful to learners and education providers, some times NA schools and vocational schools, etc in helping learners transfer credit to RA schools.

This is from the Coursera web site FAQ for these 4 courses specialization.

Ah, so your young buddy there is going for the Coursera Google IT Support Professional! It all depends on the receiving college, an example is TESU only accepts it as 3 credits whereas COSC/Excelsior most likely would grant the entire 12 credits. If your relative wants to get into a Bachelors, WGU might be a better ticket as they should accept 12 as well. It's really strange, as some community colleges may grant more than the recommended at 12 credits. The sister board discussed/talked about this here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-Google-IT-support-from-Coursera-qualify-ACE-credit?highlight=google+it

At many institutions it will heavily depend on the advisor's discretion. If you can, I'd advise them to speak with the Chair of the program that they're looking at transferring into. Generally Program Directors, Chairs, or Deans will have more discretion in how/if they transfer in ACE Recommended credits, as non-program advisors are often limited to direct corresponding recommendations. It's also worth mentioning to be aware, that some administrators are more open to transfer credits than others. Some may consider credits earned elsewhere as not being compatible with their subject coverage (some times this is true) and other times, they may have short-term thinking and see transferring in too many courses as a negative towards their performance metrics.

I would guess that this is the Holy Grail for Coursera, EdX, etc. I'd guess further that they'd be happy to augment their materials in order to achieve that goal. And once schools and accreditors begin accepting these courses for credit you will see a new wave of MOOC degrees pop up.
