The American Historical Association is a professional organization of historians, isn't it? What kind of recognition does it bestow on university history programs and what are the repercussions of not having it? Is APUS/AMU's regional accreditor (the HLC?) refusing to approve the new program unless the AHA signs off on it?

I've always thought that history, especially military history, was one of APUS/AMU's strengths. It could probably field a good history PhD program in those specialties. Easily comparable to studying military history at some of the existing history PhD programs out there that don't emphasize the subject as much.

Why should APUS care what the AHA has to say? The AHA is not an accrediting agency.

And again the misinformation is out there. On one of APUS Facebook Ads....

Michael Mitchell Just disappointed you do not have a PhD or DA in History.
    Justin Langel
Justin Langel The American Historical Association will not recognize online PhD programs.
    Michael Mitchell
Michael Mitchell The AHA is,not a regulatory organization. Only the 6 regional accrediting agencies matter. The AHA in this case is irrelevant
    Michael Mitchell
Michael Mitchell Also, the AHA rrcognizes UNISA. Their doctorates are correpondence. With all due respect, I have never heard of a university not starting a program on what the AHA does not recognize.

I wrote a letter to the Director of Doctoral Programs about this. I stated I hope that APUS did not base their online military history/history/military studies on the AHA. They are not a regulatory agency. Never have been. She has not responded yet.

Letter I Composed to Dr. Powell- President of APUS

Good morning. I hope you are well. My name is Michael Mitchell. I am a graduate student at APUS ( 1038819). I have been at APUS for 5 years now. (long story..LOL) I am hearing misinformation. The reason that APUS gave not to have doctoral programs is because the American Historical Association will not recognize them. Well, as you well know, the AHA is not an accrediting agency. In this case, they are irrelevant. As much as I respect the AHA( I am a member), they have no bearing on whether a future PhD or DA gets a job. That is dependent what that historian does in the teaching field and publishing. I have no idea how this misinformation got out there, but it could not be further from the truth
