I like it when they are named after presidents. I would have no problem attending one. It takes some thought I think.
    Bad ideas:
    Jimmy Carter
    Lyndon Johnson
    James Polk
    Martin Van Buren
David Rice Atchison-lacks staying power you know...

    Good:
    Zachary Taylor
    Benjamin Harrison
Woodrow Wilson (except it is hard to say. I sound like Elmer Fudd)

    Too recent doesn't seem right.
Too old with baggage..James Garfield for example doesn't seem right
Of course this is all just my opinion. But my opinion beats the heck of a NEW Charter...

Why would I feel that way about a school that was founded in 1821, not very long after its namesake died, in the city named after him? An almost 200 year old school is not trying to puff itself up the way these relatively recently-founded schools do by naming themselves after Presidents.

William Howard Taft University sounds like it should be in Cincinnati, OH.

Why are James Polk University and/or James Garfield University not good names for a school?

Well that’s one thing about a virtual university’s HQ /office location; it wouldn’t be any more difficult to be located in Cincinnati, OH than Santa Ana, CA or now Denver, CO.

There is a "Polk State College" in Polk County, Florida, which is named for President James Polk.
But nobody outside of central Florida knows about it.

And there was once a "Garfield University", located in Wichita KS and named for President James Garfield.
But it's even more obscure; the name was changed to "Friends University" in the 19th Century.

So history clearly suggests that these particular names do not lend prominence to educational institutions.

Hey, don't be dumping on schools named after former Presidents.....my twins are both proud graduates of the Millard Fillmore Institute, and they just started 4th grade. ;)

    Schools Named for Presidents

I don't see why there's any problem with naming universities for presidents. However, I do think that universities named for presidents ought to be located in a state wherein the president once lived. For example, Thomas Jefferson University sounds like it should be in Virginia and Abraham Lincoln University sounds like it should be in Illinois.

Psst, mid-level officials of Ronald Reagan University will sell degrees out the back door to fund their adventures in Central America.

The President will deny knowing anything, and nothing will really stick...

    [On "Friends University:"]
    I think it's charming.

And it was probably more intuitive to most people in the 19th century that "Friends" in such a context meant to refer to the Religious Society of Friends and the Quaker faith.

Jonathan, (dismayed that en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friends resolves directly to the TV show...)

I am concerned about the name too. It's too...(like someone said earlier) Mill sounding.

When I went to the Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission, they don't have New Charter U listed as being accredited. I will be speaking with my employer, tomorrow, to make sure they will still supply my tuition reimbursement, as agreed. The first rule in my reimbursement is that the school must be minimally accredited by this agency. Could be a deal killer for me to stay enrolled at AJU.

I would call AJU and tell them you need something in writing or in print showing the school is merely going through a name change, which should not affect accreditation.

I would think this would satisfy your employer.

John: But I hear they've been lousy alumni; haven't contributed a dime to the Alumni Fund, and didn't even show up for their Ten Year Reunion (held in the Tiki Room of the Savin Hill Sheraton).

This actually sounds like you are talking about Operation Fast & Furious?

Of course, Ronald Reagan took full responsibilty for Iran/Contra.

I'd like to see Pres O and Mr Holder take responsibilty for F&F. I won't hold my breath.
