Let me take a step back.

Malta is made up of people from all around the Mediterranean, but mostly Sicilians with everything else from all the coasts. Little bit of French. Interestingly, Maltese language is Semitic. Maltese tend to have darker completion, and black hair, yet there are Northern African, and some say Viking too. Think Greeks, Albanians, Lebanese, Israelites, Jordanians, Tunisians, or Sicilians.

I guess my knee jerk reaction was to your thoughts wondering about if the reason Maltese oppose this, because of racism. I believe most often a voiced objection is just that. A real, fundamental objection without any ulteriors of white, Christian, European racists.
