Age old debate, walden or Capella?

I'm asking this bc I have a unique situation, and everything I have searched so far on the forum is a bit dated so I wanted updated opinions.

I am going for a DBA with a specialization and both walden and Capella offer it. The cost is the same, the length is the same. All things equal, which would you choose?

My unique situation is that some of my MBA credits may transfer to walden, none will to Capella. I could have as much as 15 transfer, making it only 45 credits! But is the fact that walden might be shorter a good reason to choose by it self?

I flip flop on the two, some polls rank walden higher, but Capella has more scholars, etc etc. When i talked with both schools counselors I must say Capella was much more put together and professional, when walden seemed more salesmanesque in terms of just trying to get me to apply today today today.

Help me decide which is the best place for my DBA. Thanks

Curious, why won't your MBA credits transfer to Capella...mine did?

Ultimately, the success of your doctorate will depend on the level of scholarship; i.e. papers at conferences, the quality of your dissertation, can you publish, etc. IMHO, there is no distinguishable difference between Capella and Walden. One of my former colleagues is a doctoral student at Walden, and I know he is working his tail off...

    Good luck!

He said that credits don't transfer to the DBA program, only phd. Capella has a three year fixed program that can't be changed so they don't let transfer credits sub out some of those. Walden has no app fee and offers their foundation course for free. The girl was so excited to get me in the door she said I could start next Monday if I applied today! I understand they are for profit but they didn't seem as professional as capella. Though I know it prob isn't fair to judge based on one convo with each school, so I need opinions from here, since obviously if I choose walden, I need to decide soon

I do not think you can go wrong with either. Pick the one that best meets your needs.

What he said. They are worthy competitors.

Based on your situation, all other things being equal, I would choose Walden, based on shorter time to degree.

    Good luck!

Well I am still waiting to her back to see if credits transfer.....

However there is another school that just came to my attention. I found Grand Canyon University and the cost is much cheaper, almost 37k total! I may even switch back to the I/O PhD, but that is irrelevant for this thread. Anyone have any insight on that school?

No offense intended but it seems like you're signing into these programs without having done even the most basic research (know what programs exist). I'd suggest that you cool your jets and do some more homework.

Just randomly happened to find GCu this morning and wanted to know opinions

Completing a PhD/DBA is a huge committment. There are a lot of options out there and you should be absolutely convinced that your degree will serve your needs. One of the most difficult questions might be, "what am I going to do with it". I would not put much stock in "poll ratings" for these schools. If you want to teach, Grand Canyon is a B&M school and would probably meet all your needs.

"Just randomly happened to find..." means you haven't done your homework. Hopefully this is not the way you do research or else your dissertation is... well... I'm sure you'll be just fine. Pay no attention to me.

My heart is with Walden since I was in this game long before Capella came along. But then again, I was around when TGSA was formed (which became Capella) and I know that they, like Walden, have always been serious about academic processes and contributions.

There is no difference between the schools as far as reputation goes. Choose the degree that meets your needs, has the processes that fit your expectations, etc. In other words, take the degree you want.

Is there anyone on the board that has gotten their DBA from Grand Canyon?

I believe that their DBA program is too new to have any graduates yet.

I posted here for opinions on the school, not an assessment of my "homework" style. I'm surprised a moderator on the forum would be so negative when I am just looking for answers and opinions about schools.

I stumbled upon it when someone suggested the school in another post. It's a small school so it doesn't come up in google searches

I can't really comment on Capella but Walden has a good track of graduates working in academia and industry.
If you do a google "PhD, Walden", you will find lots of faculty holding credentials from Walden.
If you are planning to do the DBA, I would strongly suggest getting a specialization in high demand like Accounting. General DBAs are not so easy to sell unless you already have a strong Master's with many graduate credits in a particular area.

I cosidered Capella a while ago but was not so keen about their payment plan. Basically, you don't pay per credit but a fixed fee pay semester. If you cannot take classes, you still need to pay for your tuition fees. Not very good for people like me that was getting paid by my employer and could only bill my employer per course and not a fixed tuition fee. May be they have a better payment plan now.

And while this may be a bit unfair, my impression is you have to be ok with for-profits with a healthy metaphysical jesus-juice vibe to be ok with GCU. (NCAA membership not taken into consideration.)

I wonder if they still promote a faith based education since they went for profit? My grad school was catholic but not once was anything ever faith based at all.
