Advice on PhD in psychology, behavior, cognitive sci

Nice try, Chris. But you should already know that, despite my reputation as a prick, I never "out" people. Besides, I see that as soon as you read my previous post, you took a positive step to protect your identity (probably kicking yourself in the ass for having revealed it in the first place). While I could provide a direct link that would reveal your full name, and despite the fact that you are not yet worthy of being treated as a doctor, I will take a pass in order to watch your continuing professional growth.

Why, Chris, that's the first time you ever acknowledged that. But I'm sorry to disappoint you - I determine if and when I'll be a prick, you do not. As for the video to which you refer, it's a shame that you have removed it - with all of the crap you have on your YouTube channel (and much of it is crap), the one you unlisted was one of the best and most eloquent. (No sweat on my end, though - I downloaded it weeks ago for the sake of posterity, realizing then that you would eventually come to your senses and remove it. Occasionally, I run across a video that's a "keeper," and this was one of them.)

So, kid, when are you going to realize that you and I are not in competition? Once you do, you will begin to act more like a doctor. But you've got quite a way to go. And keep practicing with the videos - you could use a lot of improvement in both your public speaking and your camera technique.

Charles Sturt University has a PhD in Psychology that can be done distance. University of Southern Queensland has a DPS and a PhD also.

I know you said only Canada and Australia but UNISA is a decent option and affordable.

There are also some DBAs out there is Industrial Psychology.

 

Old-timers on DI may remember Tom Head, one of our more esteemed members who, like other accomplished DI folk from a generation ago (quite literally, the good old days), earned his Ph.D. in Religion and Society from Edith Cowan University in Perth. I imagine that he was able to pull it off on a totally external basis, since commuting to Perth from his home in Mississippi would have been a drag. Alas, Tom was one of the early retirees from DI, having not posted in 15 years. (Before Chris goes into one of his ageist rants, it's notable that Tom had earned his multiple degrees when he was even younger than Chris is now.) Edith Cowan is a public university and is about as good as it gets in Australia.

 

I think any Australian Public University is a good option. The problem might be price, it is not cheap to study at an Australian University.

The OP stated that this is mainly for personal use, to be quite honest I dont see myself spending 80K for a PhD in Australia just to hang it on the wall. If this was just for personal purpose, I would consider a South African PhD. If the OP does not like the "African" tag, there are also some credible schools that will not cost an arm or a leg.

There was a time when the NCU PhD was 6K just before accreditation, maybe chasing a good school candidate for RA accreditation might be cheaper. Also, some DEAC schools are affordable. Again, if all I want is to say I have a PhD from a School that is credible, any accredited option might do. I know there are few people here that have completed Nicaraguan degrees at low cost, again if all I want is to say I have a PhD that it is not purchased, maybe the Nicaraguan degree might do.

 

This isn't quite accurate. There are some Australian unis that are bottom-of-the-barrel, and eight that are considered the top. Everything else, it really depends on which state you are in, and what your subject of interest is.

In terms of recognition in the US, as long as you never come across an Australian when applying for positions, it won't matter which uni you choose. As can be seen here, most Americans won't have much knowledge about Aus unis, so if you're anticipating remaining stateside for your worklife, choose whichever appeals to you most. If you end up working elsewhere, eg the UK, not only is there better knowledge of Aus unis, there are also a lot more Australians.

Do your own research, and consider your own situation.

 

I think being a good or bad option depends on the objective. The OP is not stating that he wants this PhD to be a licensed psychologist, university professor or a top executive. It seems that it is just a personal quest with the intention to put PhD in a book or an article or maybe teach a 2K a gig course as an adjunct at a local college. For the objective, it is a good option.
Of course the University of Queensland or Australian National University are better options than ECU for tenure track jobs but none of the first two schools are going to accept a part time distance learning student. This type of schools normally rely on PhDs students to help with academic research that help with the objectives so wont take not so committed and with little time availability PhD students.

Some people here just want to teach few adjunct gigs and being able to be members of APA that requires a PhD. Few people have achieved this with a low profile school like Central Nicaragua. People here can throw all the stones at the Nicaraguan school but if I can get what I need with this for low cost then it is a good option me,

Being bad or god depends on what you need for yourself.

 

This is remarkably more nuanced than your original claim 'I think any Australian Public University is a good option'. In fact, it's close to the nuance of my own comment. Good work!

I will mention, though, that UQ and ANU are both public unis in Australia. Given that you appear to disagree with yourself on whether those two would be good options, you may wish to sort that out before advising others on Aus unis.
