Is this safe? I guess they have your credit card information already. I have a paypal account, but it is not tied in to my checking account so I could receive payments. What is your opinion?

If someone wanted to send me a payment via paypal, they just enter my email address, correct?

I have sent payments but never received payments. I tie it to a credit card. I would not tie it to my bank account - just me.

Yes, if someone wanted to send you a payment via paypal, they just enter your email address...

I only have experience with paypal Europe, but I know for sure that your bank account information is as safe or unsafe as your credit card information. Here in Germany the majority of paypal users prefer to add their bank account information, only! (The reason is certainly the nature of German bank accounts, which aren't checking accounts but so called giro accounts.)

However, you are able to receive payments even without an added bank account. That's the case in Europe, at least, but I'm very sure it's the same in the US. The problem is that you don't have direct access to that money. You can only use it to make payments to other paypal users. But paypal USA also offers a different way to get money out of your paypal account, the paypal debit card. ( https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/acc/dc_intro-outside ) That's maybe an alternative option, if you really don't want to add your bank account.

I've had my bank account tied to paypal for several years. I've never had a problem.

    Same here.

If you are worried about linking your primary bank account, just open another account at a different bank or credit union only and only use that one for PayPal.

    Abner,

I set up a separate bank account for Paypal. Paypal is a good way to transfer money to folks using just an email.

Ditto. I did that in 2004 and have used paypal for roughly 90% of my buying and selling on ebay. I don't mind taking a money order, but I don't buy if Paypal isn't an option. It just takes to long.
I don't have an ebay business, but I have had 300+ transactions and have had only 1 security issue which had nothing to do with paypal or my bank account. (ebay caught and resolved it in about an hour without incident)

    Hi Mintaru,

Hmmm, here is what I am wondering. Right now, my paypal account was set up with a credit card. So If a dude from Spain (or anywhere for that matter) wants to send me a payment via paypal, it would be paid to my credit card balance, correct? In other words, let's say I owe $800.00 on my credit card balance, would the payment be applied to the $800.00?

As an experiment, I am going to have my wife send me $5.00 from her paypal account to my paypal account to see what happens.

Thanks for your response everybody. Feel free to chime in. Here is what how I look at it. Money is money, if it is applied to what I owe on the credit card, that is fine with me. In this case, I would have no need to tie my paypal account to a bank account. Am I missing something?

I don't believe it can be applied to a credit card. The money will just sit in your account for you to use again, they can mail you a check for a small fee, or you can transfer it into your bank account (which I've been doing for years without any problems). Like others have said, you can open another account specifically for paypal - great choice if you plan to use it a lot.

Yep - We have had our PayPal account tied to our bank account since at least 2002 and have never had any problems when using it to buy/sell items online.

What will happen is that you'll have to pay a transaction fee. For your experiment, I would send ten cents, not $5.
Your money goes into your paypal "account" which just sits there waiting for you to tap it. You can send the money anywhere you want, but I don't think you can set up an automatic plan for it to go directly onto your credit card. I am pretty sure that you have to go in and do it.
It sounds much more difficult than it is. Whenever you want, simply send yourself money. There is a limit- I believe it's $500 per month that you can withdrawal on a regular account, but in an unlimited number of transactions.
