Hello all, Its been a while. Hope you're all well. I am considering other options for Master's work away from Social Services. I am looking at the field of Academic Advising as a career. Does anyone have suggestions for a school offering a Master's degree in the field of Academic Advising? I found a degree program from Kansas State, but wonder if there are others around. Thanks for the help, as always. - Shawn
Sounds to me like that would be a degree in Higher Education Administration. Many programs like that let you specialize in areas such as admissions, student services, etc. I'm sure if you went to petersons.org and did a search, you'd hit quite a few schools. One caveat, however, from my experience researching higher ed programs (I looked into this before deciding to become a teacher) most of them require you work full time for their internship. Of course, those were brick and mortar programs. I'm not quite sure how a DL program would work that. -Matt -Matt
Here's an M.S. in Student Personnel Administration from Concordia University Wisconsin. Look for keywords like (student personnel, or student affairs) (management or administration). A professional body is the NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, its name originally the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. It hosts a directory of graduate programs you can browse by geographic location or institution, but there isn't a distance learning tab at this time. An umbrella group of organizations some others of which may be related is The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education. A related credential: A College Counseling Certificate from University of California, San Diego Extension. Related fields from which a jump into or interface with postsecondary student advising is surely not uncommon: Guidance counseling and career counseling. More generic programs in professional counseling should often also offer content in career counseling. Good luck!
