Anyone have any first or secondhand experience with these guys? I've been working towards an ASBA @ TESU, entirely through 3rd parties so far, mainly StraighterLine. I just stumbled across Online Demos ABTU - American Business and Technology University and had never heard of them before. They seem pretty expensive to attend, but they claim to have a fairly liberal acceptance policy to transfer in credits and will evaluate your transcript (even an unofficial one) at no cost to give you an idea of where you'd stand as a student. Nationally (DEAC) accredited.

Thought I'd check here before contacting them directly and having to sift through whatever marketing and hype they try to feed me. Specifically I'm wondering about the reality of their stated transfer policy and how PLA friendly they are, but any information would be welcome.

Indeed they do. Here's what CareerAcademy.com says on the relevant page:

"CareerAcademy.com, through partnership with American Business & Technology University (ABTU), a nationally accredited online university, is currently able to provide its students the ability to earn college credits for various degree programs. ABTU provides for transfer credit from Career Academy courses completed within the last three years by challenge exams. Students can earn up to a maximum of 30 college credits towards their desired degree program."

Here's the whole thing: American Business and Technology University College Credits - IT, Cyber Security and Project Management Online Certification Training | CareerAcademy.com

Membership ($29 for first year - I have no idea how much after that) covers all course access and Career Academy itself levies no exam or extra fees (it says so). Maybe that could save a fair bit of money on an ABTU degree - but you have to be diligent in nailing down end costs. As most here will know, a lot of the external-certification courses offered require a fairly significant 3rd-party exam fee. And worth it, too - but remember, those can add up. My rule: be sure to do all the math before you sign up (for anything!)

What intrigues me though is - if I want to take a challenge exam, why am I forced to take a certain course only from a certain provider?

That is a bit odd. I hadn't noticed.

Right - it does seem odd. And if ABTU believes in CareerAcademy and there's a partnership of any sort - why are there challenge exams in the first place? Shouldn't having passed the course at CareerAcademy be good enough for credit transfer? Or do there have to be challenge exams, for some accreditation-related reason re: either school? I missed this challenge exam point, the first time round. Thanks, msganti.

ABTU is also on a show cause with DEAC. So I would recommend against proceeding at this time unless "earn a degree through an approved teachout plan" is on your bucket list.

According to the Show Cause notice, ABTU is in pretty deep at almost every level of its operation, and when in that deep there is a strong possibility of losing accreditation.
