Rich, perhaps you're still using Command Prompt instead of Powershell. It's not DOS either:

Command Prompt is a Windows program that emulates many of the command line abilities available in MS-DOS but it is not actually MS-DOS. Command Prompt is a GUI version of command.com in MS-DOS. cmd.exe is a native Windows application usually running in a Win32 console

    Differences well- explained, here. https://www.educba.com/powershell-vs-command-prompt/

From what I can tell, DOS hasn't been a part of Windows since Windows ME. It looks like Windows NT finally killed DoS as the underlying OS for Windows. Johann's information is dead-on.

A good observation, Rich. I, too, believe it did. Microsoft never said, but many (including me) believe NT might have stood for "New Technology" - which, at the time, it certainly was. And thanks, for the rest. :)

Yeah, as I've grown older, things in the past tend to scrunch up, like an accordion. It's hard to remember if something was a while ago, or a long while ago! (I had to go look up this one, thinking that something in the past was still present.)

I've been posting on this board since its inception 21 years ago. That's a lot of stuff to keep straight.

Well-said. It sure is. I think you do a better job than I do - I've only got about 15 years so far. Say, when does the DI pension kick in? :)

You didn't know? It's a defined contribution plan. And no, posts do not equal "contribution." I checked my balance the other day, and with DI's match, it comes out to....zero. Sigh....

I got a MacBook Air four or so years ago because I liked the form factor and the battery life. That it runs MacOS was actually in the "con" column, but I got it anyway. After all this time, I'm still not really a fam of MacOS, which I find is often different for the sake of difference. I've thought about putting Linux on it instead every once in a while, but I haven't had time especially when it's not unusable, just occasionally annoying.

I can see another reason why someone might hold off for a while, Steve. Those are expensive machines and it might be frustrating to think - "Dang! I paid all this money for a Mac and I end up ditching the OS and making it a Linux machine." Now, it's easily justifiable. You've had four years, the machine has depreciated some in value so it's not such a big thing.

Then you sit back and have relaxing years with Linux - LOTS of them, because it'll keep an ageing machine going -efficiently - practically forever. I was lucky - I bought the HP laptop with Windows 10 on it, new, for $250 on sale. No-brainer. One day Windows. Next, Linux.

There should be some kind of Linux --- for the human BODY!

True, although for me it was more that at least with MacOS I wouldn't have to muck about with driver compatibility, etc.; it would Just Work™.

Or so I thought until the MacOS update that unexpectedly took away my machine's capability to run 32-bit apps. Yes, it turns out they mentioned it in the release notes, so I guess that's technically on me, but I wasn't expecting it because I never installed a Windows or Linux update that deliberately removed functionality. I was an unhappy camper.

    Anyway, one of these days.

One of these days, for me: BSD Unix. Maybe for my 80th birthday, next Jan. We'll see. :)

Oh well --- maybe I can get some transfer credit for the posts in another forum...one that pays better, I hope. :(

I probably shouldn't tell you this, but when you're a moderator you get to multiply that zero by any number you want.

I love having a desktop at home. In 2006 I bought an iMac and a HP PC. Hardware wise the iMac is a rugged machine but, since I can't update the ios, it's pretty much obsolete. My HP had pretty much kept up with the MS. Windows updates until we arrived at Windows 11. I just started shopping for a new desktop. Apple is now out of consideration due to short time to obsolescence. I like the concept of an all-in-one. I spied a HP Chromebase at the bigbox store recently. It may well become my new home office desktop. Any recommendations on a PC all-in-one would be appreciated.

Just remember that even though the catalog sets a limit of 15 credits to transfer, you can always negotiate.

Jeez, that borders on insider trading. I'd report your post, but you'd be the one to get it, so....:)
