    3rd world

I will Bill, I will ... just give me time and the opportunity to catch you unawares :))

Someone on one of these posts the other day cryptically mentioned that anything that was not USA was 3rd world - I liked that!

I often used to take clients with me to US and when we went to Washington DC I used to go from the Capitol to the slums not far away - the contrast is interesting, frightening, and sobering - well it is for some of us.

One of our Prime Ministers [Keating] told the Australian public literally that we '...are at the arse end of the world...' [you can say anything publicly in Australia] and with sending our troops to God knows where to get their nuts blown off, and having our only warship stationed in the gulf with 75% of our Navy personnel on board, we seem to miss the humour of now having our exports subject to tarrifs .. well we are at the arse end of the world .................

    Peter,

    Regarding the steel tariffs.

In order to understand the US you need to understand two things, power and rabid capitalism... everything else is a secondary effect or simply part of a national mythology which supports the power and rabid capitalism.

Fundamentally the Bushies would never "want" to have the tariffs but losing these US jobs would deliver certain states to the Democrats (it is a power thing). There was an interesting article in The Guardian explaining this in detail.

Thankfully, we have both in mind-boggling quantity.

John: And in that same strange city* one finds (or did when I was there 4 or 5 years ago) some of the raunchiest porno shops literally across the street from the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building.
