I've enquired APA that whether it will accept DETC-accredited Master in Psychology program for Associate Membership, APA Membership Department reply "Yes".

Therefore I will apply CCU Psychology program if it is accredited!

I believe that would be Azaliah College, about 2 years ago. They disappeared from the list not long after acquiring accreditation in circumstances that have never been made public. Others have been booted but they don't make a public spectacle of it.

Just as an FYI - schools can voluntarily resign their accreditation before the commissioners take action. While we cannot assume that every school who resigned would have had action taken, I think it is probable at least some of the schools who have resigned fall into that category. There are a number of actions that can be take, but two related to this thread are requiring regular progress reports that show significant improvement or revoking accreditation.

Well, Gina, if Jeff Davis rates a community college*, Honest Abe ought to rate a university.

    *Brewton, Alabama; no DL

For a school, reputation is a large part of its value. It is far easier to hurt one's reputation than it is to improve one's damaged reputation. I believe that this is even more true for an accreditation agency. The AICS debacle was despicable. Will DETC ever be able to live it down in my eyes? Perhaps but it will be a most excellent example of why DETC is inferior to RA for years to come, at least in my eyes.

Good Lord, someone else on this forum knows of Brewton!

Yes, yes, I am the product of an L.A. couple: Mother -- Brewton, Father -- Flomaton.

Talk about yer bright lights and big city! :D

For Schools Reputation is about 75% of their product ...

    Bill,

I agree with you. In the education sector you can say
that reputation is almost everything and can be seen from:

    - Kind of alumni you have
    - Marketing of your school
    - Name recognition
    - Publicity
    - Programs you have
    - Creativity/Diversity of programs

A large number of R/A schools wouldn't qualify for DETC accreditation. Does this make them worse schools?

Keep it in perspective - there are some pretty terrible R/A schools out there.

  10. I totally agree. You are absolutely 100% correct. Anyone who does not agree must be a mill shill.

I realize that was just conjecture, but could you give us an example? Keep in mind that many (most?) RA schools fall outside DETC's scope of operations. So, please, give us an example of a school that is within DETC's scope, is RA, yet would not be of sufficient quality to get DETC accreditation.

One way to measure a school's quality is acceptance of their degrees for employment purposes. Tuition reimbursement, promotion of existing employees, and hiring of new ones are all examples. Please allows us even one example where a degree from a DETC-accredited school is acceptable but one from an RA school is not.

Any one that does not require proctored exams??

That would be a degree of perception of quality, hardly a measure.

No examples, I see. I didn't think so.

As for a measure of quality, my dissertation examined that very topic in the literature review, that no one has measured this (until now, of course).

And please don't think you can insinuate that degree acceptance isn't a measure of quality. It is a major issue with students and a very common topic around here. You can try to dismiss it (because it refutes your statement), but that doesn't make it so.

Everyone has an opinion about everything. Acceptance could be a function of quality or simply a response to a rich sounding name or myriad other reasons.

If acceptance is a major issue, why do so many attend such crappy schools? R/A is what it is about, quality is secondary.

    In portugese:

Eu totalmente concordo. Tenham absolutamente 100% ano correto. Qualquer um quem não concorda deve ser um shill de engenho.

    And back to english again:

I grossly agree. Have absolutely 100% year. Any a who does not it agree should be a shill of device.

    Gotta Love it!:D

I do NOT think this is a step in the right direction. This change does not indicate that schools that have have had despicable practices will not be accredited. It simply states that they must first change their name.

This would only make it more difficult for students to find information on schools with "notorious repatuations." It would do nothing to improve the quality of those schools.

If DETC had the students' interest at heart, they would insist that schools with "notorious reputations" NOT change their names.

It seems that they are more interested in putting up a false front than in helping students.

Because accreditation normally translates into wide acceptance. People who take their degrees from unaccredited schools know all about that.
