This news story called an end to the US nursing shortage last year, at least temporarily:

In the long term, demand for nurses is expected to grow again. But right now, US nursing programs appear to be producing more new graduates than the market can absorb. Of course, that doesn't mean that the market is bad in all parts of the country; I'm sure there are some regions where nurses are in short supply.

It looks like maybe you are right. Is she in Virginia, too? Seems like things are better on your side of the continent.

Yeesh. We live in an age of unemployed lawyers, engineers and now nurses. Somehow, in this bizzaro economy, we still have to suffer through listening to bozos like Herman Cain saying that jobless people are failures.

Also, I once again have to marvel about how much my AA in Nothing Really from Neverheardofit College has helped me fill my own employment endeavors. How can anyone accurately predict their own future financial status?

Ding ding ding! They sit there at the top of their tree waiting to swoop down and eat their young. My mom nursed for 40 years, I've heard it all. IF you f-up you're dead meat. And if you're dead meat, it sure helps keep the old guard around.
I think it's still very competitive to get into nursing school, the ones I applied to were very strict (but transparent) regarding how applicants were ranked, etc. But I think one thing I noticed is that few students were using their pre-req time to work as a CNA or complete an EMT Basic, or something that would help get them in the game. Any and all networking pays off, assuming you're a great employee.

I read somewhere that you now have to make a minimum of $65,000 per year to live the lifestyle of the average welfare leech. The government is slowly but surely removing the incentive to work.

And yes, whoever remains jobless by choice because welfare pays better, they are abject failures at life.

I have a friend who teaches drum lessons part time and refuses to work any more than that. His wife (almost ex-wife now) refuses to work at all and chooses to live in shelters. The guy often sleeps in his car, which barely runs. Both of them take food stamps and other forms of government assistance. How can people live like that? It seems miserable to me.

I've told him several times to get it together, but he is not interested. I've helped him out a number of times, but it is always money down a black hole because nothing improves.

You can't. Life is often quite a surprise. At least it has been for me.

In referring to "they" we are talking about health care administrators, right? That's what I meant, but in reading my post, I did not make that very clear.

Can we leave the politics out of this. The onle place you can come and not hear political nonsense should be here. Just my opinion.

This is tough to do, especially if you're in a completely different career field, family, kids, etc. I subscribe to the "you do what you have to" to make things happen school of thought, but this is a tall order for someone with an established family life and career (I know you know this all too well).

I just had an interesting conversation with our hospitals nursing educator. She tells me that the biggest issue with new nurses is not really the lack of experience (we provide that), but rather regulatory issues surrounding a shift towards becoming an accredited "nursing excellence magnate" hospital. In short, to become a center of nursing excellence (a designation bestowed by some nursing group) the hospital must demonstrate that 60% of it's nurses hold the Bachelors degree BSN designation. CC's and the trade schools may well turn out minimally qualified RN's who pass their NCLEX...but even with experience these nurses will face an increasingly difficult time finding employment without the Bachelors degree.

Enrolling in a BSN program is increasingly important. Seeking the above designation also requires nurse managers to hold an MSN.

I am told that we give preference to RN's who demonstrate enrollment in a BSN program.

I think that's an excellent point. In addition, to help with this push, many (most?) hospitals offer educational reimbursements to pursue a BSN degree. So, the issue for some nurses I've met is that they'd rather earn the RN at the local CC and let the hospital "pay for" their BSN instead of doing so themselves. A BSN is costly if you start from scratch (less so for RNs- options like the big 3 exist for those already licensed). There is incentive to wait, if you can get hired.

And there's that conundrum again; it's easier to get hired with a BSN but too expensive to get it without your hospital employer paying for it.

I tried really hard to get my daughter to go for nursing, but she wouldn't hear of it. Now I'm sort of glad it worked out that way.

Hmm. Considering how much influence policy makers have over our lives, it's pretty tough to discuss these sorts of issues meaningfully if we ignore the 800 lb. elephant and donkey in the room.

Agree with Steve. Politics are a part of this and most other working situations, pretty hard to leave it out.

Stupid question: Since the word "politics" appears to be plural, would we use the word "it" or "them" when referring back to it (or them)? I naturally want to use "it" like I did above, but technically it seems to be proper to use the word "them."

I live in large ex soviet, Russian speaking community.
Many Nurses came from Russia or Ukraine etc and completed only Ychilishe a college for Nursing. They pass the RN exam here in US with high scores.

Then a very popular option here is

    Nursing | ICC Education

I know people who moved from California to NY. In S Cal its much easier to get RN job if you are from Philippines. Looks like mafia style fight and domination with Armenians mostly over control who will be hired. Most medical jobs hiring of type XRay TEch, Nursing, etc heavily dominated ethnically.
