I guess that goes the same for you, and your claim that the economy is "going nuts." The bottom line is the number is at 312,000 currently, and a one week 9,000 increase in job-less claims is a sharp one. Your Feb. 17th story that has a decline at 2,000 has just been reversed and the some.

You continue to compare the current economy with how it was in Nov. 2000. We were in a recession back then and we still aren't out of the woods yet. Until I see a couple solid quarters of steady growth, I will not be convinced that we have made an "economic turnaround" as you put it.

It's interesting how you read into an article and then find some little tidbit you think no one hasn't already heard before.

You want a couple of quarters? How 'bout more than five...

Today the Department of Labor released its December jobs report highlighting the creation of 157,000 jobs in the payroll survey and a 5.4 percent unemployment rate. Overall, 2004 was the strongest year for job creation since 1999, with over 2.2 million new jobs created.[1] It is hard to recall that as recently as the fall of 2003, many feared that the country was mired in a ‘jobless recovery.’ How different things look today now that the economy has created new jobs in each of the last sixteen months. Since President Bush enacted his 2003 tax cuts, the country’s base of payroll jobs has increased by 2.5 million and the unemployment rate has dropped from 6.3 percent in June of 2003 to 5.4 percent last month.

OK, so now I guess you want to see a decade of growth before you'll believe it.

These numbers can be deceiving. This 5.4% unemployment rate simply represents the percentage of people working relative to the total labor pool. What they don't tell you is that the labor pool is shrinking (has been since mid-2002) even while the actual population continues to increase.

Oh, my God!! That is so hugely & originally funny!!

I have NEVER heard a donut joke before!!!

You really need to submit some of your material to the Hollywood powerbrokers, because associating police officers with donuts is truly ground-breaking material. Really, who else has ever come up with that type of comparison?

You are DA MAN for dreaming the idea that police officers might actually patronize a 24/7 coffee establishment.

While Tom Ridge may very well make a good president, he'll need to develop more of a personality. I've seen him speak live. He's very serious and rigid, all traits that have hurt others in the past (see Al Gore).

Oh puulease, talk about finding little tidbits. You asked for two quarters of recovery. I showed you five. Then you say the numbers are deceiving. You can't argue about the recovery. No matter how many times you say it, it's never going to be true.

You make baseless statements and accusations. You draw subjective inferences about things you have no personal experience with. When I challenge you or provide proof they are not true, you change the subject.

You accuse me of blindly following Bush, but you are the one who toes the line of the Left leaders like Dean, Polosi, and Kennedy with your ridiculous claims and disregard for the truth.

Actually, the Elections of 2000 and 2004 were not so much lost as thrown. You see, the Clintons decided that if the Demos were to run a couple of arrogant individuals for pres in 2000 and 2004, there would be no incumbent Democratic president, clearing the way for an easy victory for Hillary in 2008 and 2012 and, then, in 2016, Chelsea gets elected and gets inaugurated in January 2017 at age 36 years, 11 months (younger than Teddy Roosevelt or Jack Kennedy)!

I agree, Ridge does kind of seem like a boring guy. Plus, I don't think he could beat Hillary. Jeb Bush may be one of the only Republican candidates that could.

I'm personally hoping for a Jeb/Hillary match-up because it sure would be fun to follow. Real Clear Politics has them polling neck and neck in a virtual race.

What I would be far more interested in is the actual financial worth of the new jobs created vs. the old jobs lost. Example: Suppose I were to figure out how to raise the billions necessary to perform a hostile takeover offer on some fast-food chain. Suppose I fire the chairman of the board, the president, and the executive vice-president and hire four new burger flippers. My God! I'm a net job creator!

    DOL definitions

    Good point Ted:

On the subject of fast food jobs, I must mention something. DOL has undergone some convenient job definition changes. DOL, under this administration, has changed the term of manufacturing to include fast food workers! So if you work at Burger King, you are manufacturing hamburgers. Can you believe it! Of course, this is done to make it appear that we have not lost that many manufacturing jobs in this country. Very sad, and very deceptive.

    Just my two cents!

Having worked for McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's, I can assure you that, though their methods are different, all three basically involve mindlessly mass-producing burgers! Not for nothing is McD's known as Mac Construction Company!
