I am curious to know why ppl still go for US MBA programs by DL, when the UK counterparts (Warwick, Henley etc) are some of the top MBA programs in the world?

The cost might be one of the reasons.

The EBS MBA is beeng discussed somewhere in another thread, and I browsed the website to check on its cost... quite costly compared to where I'm enrolled now aside from unavailable testing center in the UAE (as far as the website info is concerned). There's no doubt the EBS MBA courses are excellent choices.

I like their exit programs (Grad Cert, Grad Dip, and etc.). This is truly worthwhile for working professionals to earn qualification every step of the way until the MBA is completed. I've seen this system in many UK graduate programs and also true in Australia particularly the APESMA - Latrobe MBA program.

BTW, why can't other universities do the same?

Part of the reason may be that U.S. universities use aggressive marketing campaigns to attract students from Europe into their DL programs (University of Phoenix for example). Some corporations also place a higher value on U.S. MBA programs.

The schools like Warwick and Henley do have exceptional DL business programs. Their only draw back is that they have failed to include the "polish" and "prestige" in their campaigns to attract prospective students.

Well, perhaps that's part of the business, but I found the university where I'm enrolled now through a search engine. After checking its legitimacy, cost and my eligibility for admission, I decided to get into the program... a US DETC accredited university.

In the Middle-East and many parts of the world, UK degrees are preferred too.

I'm with Felipe on this one: the cost.

Although UK universities are usually cheaper than US universities, the MBA is the one gloriously expensive exception to this rule. All the decent DL MBAs tend to be priced as executive MBAs.

It's the price. When I first started looking into DL MBA I was thinking of going for an MBA with U of London or HWU. However later I learned that there is a lot of really great school in the US that offer DL MBAs at a lot lower cost. Also most US MBAs can be completed a lot faster then UK MBAs. Plus I live in Canada and plan on working in Canada, so I feel that a Master degree from US school would be a lot more accepted here.

I went for the UK MBA

I have just enrolled in the EBS MBA, and live in Vancouver Canada - the cost seems to be reasonable for the materials and the online support. I decided that an exam based model fit my schedule (able to complete it quicker than semester based system). I have ordered all the core courses and they will give me an excellent well rounded knowledge.

The reputation of the program convinced me, as well as the specialty in strategic planning - which is an interest of mine.

The number of US programs made it very difficult to distinguish them, I have a close friend with a bad UoP experience, and quite a few corporations that I am aware of support employees through the EBS program (including mine). I was put off by some of the aggressive marketing of some of the programs (I'm sure they are good programs, but I felt a little stalked!)

I know that there are less expensive programs, but the fact that EBS is well known and well regarded led me to choose it.

Because the marginal utility of a DL UK MBA , no matter how respected, may be quite low to the average joe in the US?

No numbers to back this up, but isn't a big part of what separates an elite MBA from an average MBA is the network and recruiting received from an association with an elite program?

I know if I was starting my career and looking for an MBA as an entry tool, then networking and recruitment would be important to me, so I certainly agree with your point.

I entered a DL MBA because I had advanced to the VP level with my law degree and wanted the business foundation to round out my knowledge base. What the "average joe" says wasn't part of my decision.

I am not aware of the extent to which other distance MBAs have networking and recruitment assistance. Do others know more about this aspect of DL MBAs?
