    Hello,

I would like to find out how well accepted will a degree from South Africa be in Canada?

    Thank you,
    Brad

In general, a South African degree is likely to be accepted. In some cases, perhaps not. What degree? From what university? And for what purpose?

    Hey Oxpecker,

Thanks for the reply. The schools that I am interested in are University of Pretoria and Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. I want to get an LLB, but I don't want to be a lawyer. I work in business and I am hoping that an LLB would give me a nice salary increase.

    Brad,
You may want to consider contacting the Ministry of Education or the Bar Association in your province to see if this degree carries any credibility. Foreign LLBs can be either received or rejected by employers depending on where you received your degree and what you majored in.
South African degrees are generally well accepted in Canada. I know of one person who received his MComm from Rhodes University and he's now a senior e-marketing manager with Bell Canada.

Brad - If you're looking for an LLB but are uncertain about how acceptable a South African degree will be at your present employment, you may want to consider previewing your choice with the HR people. In any case, doesn't the University of London have an LLB program too? It's not going to get a lot more acceptable than that.

I suspect an LLB may be one of the less portable degrees. So I agree with Roy that you should make some enquiries locally.

I assume you are aware that Potch will soon be no more (but will become North-West University).

    forget pretoria and potch

Hi Brad - your interest in an South African LLB caught my eye (again) and so I thought I'd toss you a link:

As you can see, UFS offers an online LLB degree program. While Pretoria has an LLB program, I've seen nothing that indicates that it's a DL program. BTW, you may want to look at the University of London LLB program, if for nothing else than its comparison value. Good luck,
    Jack

If I am not in error South African law is based on a form of hybrid law while the Canadian legal system is based on "Common Law."

Probably a U.K. (University of London, Northumbria etc...) "Common Law" LL.B. would be a more fitting credential for use in Canada in legal and business fields.
