Just what is the controversy here?

I am late to this thread, but as long as Harris did the work, he updates and it has never been submitted for another degree which he earned, I don't see a problem. In a past thread on this board, a guy had to drop out of Leicester due to non-review of his work by his promoter. The work was then submitted to an unnamed German university, defended and the degree awarded. Heck, if the ever officious Germans have no problem with it I never would never object to it.

And Peter, I should point out that in my research as to the viability of SA degrees, I did a google search of "PHD, [SA University name]" and got a large amount of hits on professors at Australian and New Zealand universities. It would appear they have some utility at least there.

Again, sorry for entering my, what was it, 0.13 Rand?

Firstly, I don't agree with the apparently harsh Australian requirement per se although situations will arise where there can be doubt as to whose work you are really presenting, and under what degree of scrutinty/rigour etc it was complied. However, I am here and have to accept it, and just want others to be aware of how it can pan out.

Secondly, I also don't agree with the trwatment I have seen of SA qualifications/degrees, but then they want to come here, and maybe some see an advantage for them in the SA's disadvantages ... life sucks sometimes

Well, just don't do a search on "PHD, Unisa" or you'll get very misleading results!!! :p

    hi peter,

At a groups of IT colleges wher I was national GM,
we regarded all SA qualifications as having no value -
a bit tought but it was board policy.

FYI. Rand Afrikaans University IT program is
accredited by UK British Computer Society. This should
make their IT program on par with all UK and
    australia universities .

    any comments ?

    quote from RAU website

" IT degree at RAU gets international accreditation

    by Sonia Cronjé - 3/31/2003
RAU’s BSc (IT) degree has been accredited by the
British Computer Society (BCS) as from the beginning
    of 2003, for a 5-year period.

This is the first such accreditation in Africa, and
only the third outside the UK.The BCS is one of the
largest and most professional IT societies in the
world, and has very strict professional entrance
    requirements.

This accreditation means that RAU’s BSc (IT) degree
now allows a student to join – on completion of the
degree course – the BCS immediately without any
further entrance exams etc.The accreditation therefore
actually places RAU’s BSc (IT) degree on the same
level and standard as the equivalently accredited
course in the UK, and therefore gives international
acceptance and recognition to the degree course.

Are these South African Phd-granting Universities worthy and accepted by American standards and accredited colleges and universities? Basically, is this the real thing? How about the course content? Trivial and mediocre? Or in depth and meaningful?
