    Recognition of doctorate stirs debate

    By Patrick Lawnham
    October 09, 2002

    http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,5842945%255E23004,00.html

ADELAIDE University has given de facto recognition to an unaccredited, non-traditional university in the US, designating a lecturer with a PhD from Pacific Western University as doctor.

The move could muddy practices for recognition of overseas degrees in Australia when traditional institutions are under challenge from private colleges, virtual universities, officially unaccredited universities and degree mills.

    On a side note:

Degrees from these institutions are illegal for use in Oregon:

Very old news, as using the search function on this site would have revealed.

If you do not like what I post then I suggest you ignore it.

Or you could take his suggestion (again) and do some research before you post. "It is a part of netiquette." Believe it or not, people see a thread and read it, then find it was a waste of time. The polite thing to do would be to find out if the subject was already discussed or under discussion. Enlivening a dead thread with new news is cool, but redundantly raising a dead issue is not.

You are free to ignore me as well. In fact Rich I think I would prefer it.

Sorry, if I appear to be rude. But this is getting petty.

Conversely, if you're not willing to accept feedback, don't post.

Good idea. This forum is not for me. I will take my leave now. Thank you for allowing me to have my say, it has been a pleasure.

As I said, it is an accepted part of netiquette to do some reading on a board before posting. I'm sure that after more than 150 posts, you realize this. Taking umbrage over having this very obvious point made is disappointing.

If you would prefer to be ignored, stop posting reduntant information. You will be successful.

    "Redundant." Sigh....:(

I don't mind if he posts redundant information, I've done it myself. I just think it's silly to bristle when someone points it out. I remember, back in the aed days, when I thought I'd "discovered" the Salve Regina University DL programs. Some guy named Levicoff informed me (in an uncharacteristically polite manner) that this was old info and I learned, as Rich suggested, to do a bit of research prior to posting some "new discovery." It's possible that Frankie will be back after he cools off a bit. Could that happen Rich?

Not really - the news in each of the posts you have made is 2002
    not 2003

This is a year ago which is a long time anywhere, particularly at degreeinfo, and believe me, not much is ever missed, so do yourself a favour by:

    1. Keeping your shirt on, and

    2. Checking before you write

Rich is just one of many who think the same thing, so cool it.

In the "Greenwich University" thread in the distance learning section I apologised for my abrasive behaviour and admitted to my error.

    I do so again.

I'm not comfortable with attacking people just because they tried to share a discovery that they thought was interesting.

People often ask questions and express ideas that have been asked and expressed before them. If that were forbidden, then Degreeinfo would have very few participants.

People should be welcomed and encouraged to participate, not made afraid that if they open their mouths they will get their teeth kicked down their throat.

    Aw. come on ....

Bill, we haven't had a 'Frankie' for so long ... sounds a bit like 'Frenchie'? ... so why can't we bash Frankie, just a little please?

Frankie - don't get upset, as we all except those of us who deem to be perfect, have been down the same track at some stage. There are a few, or maybe more that a few, who do a regular global monitoring of edunews where it reales to DL and non RA degrees, possibly through Google news or a similar service. The chance of news of the PWU kind one year old remaining undiscovered is pretty remote.

It is however an interesting scenario, as the position has been, and I understand still is, defended by the University concerned, but remember that this happened in Australia. Out here these sorts of things tend to 'happen', as your track record - research, publications, refereed papers etc - get you where you are rather than your parchment. The PWU PhD is of no concern, and it would not be out of order to find these people supervising PhD candidates ... in many schools these are done by people with research prowess but maybe only an honours batchelor degree holder, and in several top faculties in Law and Accounting for example, you will find Deans without doctorates ...

So read on, roll with the punches and share your next discovery with the readers ...

Nobody has bashed Peter French in a long time. Can't we take on Peter for old time's sake?

First of all, no one is suggesting that bringing up old news is forbidden. He wasn't banned for it, right. No, someone simply pointed out that it had been discussed before. Perhaps not as politely as possible, but Frankie is not exactly a newbie.

Here I thought this might be an interesting thread, but the entire thing was worthless.

Nonetheless, it did remind me that it's been a while since I said anything about Rich Douglas. You know, the guy who claimed to be an expert in distance education for years and then got snockered by MIGS, one of the most obvious degree mills ever to come along. The one who, while everyone recognized that MIGS was a sham, continued to defend not only the school but his poor decision to enroll in it? The one who, despite now having a legit Ph.D. from Union, will always carry his history with MIGS along with him.

But no, I guess I needn't sink so low as to talk about him at this point. :D

Hey, you're such a DL snob. You know the old saying . . . "If you're not part of the solution then you're part of the problem."
You want interesting threads? Then come out from under that rock and post a message now and then.
    ;)
