My plan is to eventually obtain an MFA, hopefully through Warren-Wilson College, and teach creative writing in one form or another on a college level. The idea of teaching online appeals to me, but I'm not sure how it works. Does an online teacher teach from on campus, or is the job done entirely out of the teacher's home?

    Thanks,

The job could be done at any time and at any place in asynchronous online instructions. It could also be done at any place and at a fixed time if is a synchronous online format. More than 80 percent of online instructions use asynchronous format.

It depends on the policies of the school.

At our local community college, instructors who teach a distance learning class are required to hold on-campus office hours equal to the time that would have been spent in a "real world" classroom. So, if you teach a 3 semester credit hour course online you are expected to schedule at least 3 office hours per week. This is in addition to the 1 office hour per week required for every class.

So, a faculty member teaching their entire load online spends about as much time on campus as those teaching entirely in the classroom.

Of course, there are plenty of schools don't even expect online instructor to be in the same state, much less make appearances on campus.

I've taught online graduate courses for a couple of years now and have always worked from home. None of the universities (about 4 or 5) have even been in the same state where I live :)

If you are a part time online instructor, you are not normally required to be on campus. However, if the position is full time it normally requires to be on campus.

Teaching online is not exactly "Teaching". It is more like online facilitation and administration so you are not required to "lecture" students.
