My husband is considering both University of Maryland University College and Thomas Edison State College for his BA online. Does anyone here have a preference between the two, and if so, why? Thanks for any advice. Amy
I don't think your husband can go wrong with either one, but both have their pros & cons. UMUC probably has better name recognition, but has limited program offerings, a cap on transfer credit, and is a bit pricey. TESC isn't as well known, but has almost every major imaginable, is relatively cheap, and has no limit on transfer, exam, and portfolio credit. What field of study is your husband planning on pursuing?

Bruce, My husband would like to pursue an undergraduate degree in journalism. The two schools I mentioned looked the most promising. In fact, I believe they were the only two I found that offered Journalism as a major to be completed entirely online. I e-mailed a couple of others that were mentioned on this board as possibilities (Montana at Billings and Old Dominion U, etc) and was either told that they didn't offer it, or not responded to at all. Maybe I overlooked a program. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks, Amy
One off the top of my head is Union Institute & University, where your husband could design his own major & degree program through either the Center for Distance Learning or Vermont College. A Journalism major could be easily accommodated. I think it comes down to what's most important to your husband. If cost or transfer/exam/portfolio credit is a major concern, then TESC is probably the best bet. Name recognition has to go to UMUC, and total flexibility to Union.
who else values UMUC... Hi folks, This is about UMUC and TESC, but a little off-thread since it isn't a comparison of the two. UMUC and TESC are both the victims of plagiarism of materials by a number of disreputable "universities." Macarther University has copied about 200 pages of UMUC's course catalogue (see this URL: http://www.hep.uiuc.edu/home/g-gollin/nonCHEA/#macarther_university) In particular, macarther p. 12 = UMUC p. 18, and the course descriptins starting at macarther p. 14 match with the UMUC descriptions starting at p. 101. The Macarther catalogue alphabetizes them by "rubric" so that AASP 201 (AfroAmerican Studies) comes before ACCT 220 (accounting) while UMUC alphabetizes them by department/program name. Adams University and Kendall University also have grabbed stuff from UMUC. TESC has had its course descriptions copied by Trinity College and University (again take a look at my web page for documentation). I don't have anything to offer concerning a comparison of UMUC and TESC, but I feel a certain amount of sympathy for both of them because of the apparent theft of their (implicitly copyrighted??) material. It's a strange kind of stamp of approval, for a school to have its stuff copied by other organizations. I've sent email to both places about the plagiarism, but I don't know if they'll decide to press the issue or not. regards, George
Ohio University is another possibility: It seems cost effective: If online courses are a must then OU is likely not an option. If credit by exam and/or correspondence courses are acceptable then the school options expand. It's been noted on this board that a DL degree title from OU cannot be the same as one of their standard degree titles. If they have a degree called Journalism then the DL degree would be called something similar but not the same. Ohio University DL
