Like I said, I am not too fond of the term "questionable," but for lack of a better word... I will give the matter so more thought, but a better solution might require the efforts of a far more cunning linguist than I. I simply feel that it is important to more prominently display the discussions of accreditation from such countries as Liberia, St. Kitts, Dominica, etc., as this insidious problem of doing an end-run-around GAAP appears to becoming more pervasive. Moreover, from a database administration viewpoint, it would also absorb the MIGS posts quite well, as MIGS was one of the pioneers in circumventing GAAP and its shenanigans are so well documented.

First, accreditation is uniquely American, and what needs to be discussed is foreign equivalency and legitimacy. Second, what would render this legitimacy questionable, is that instead of it being a simple question of accredited versus unaccredited, the institution appears to be both. In other words, what these schools have in common is that the accreditation may or may not be legitimate, but the means through which it was acquired is highly suspect.

What is the problem with TUI?

 

Some people feel the arrangement--whereas a college in New York is the home campus for an operation in California offering degree it, the home campus, does not--is suspect. Also, Touro University International came out touting its accreditation before the Middle States came out with their decision to include TUI in Touro's accreditation. Finally, some are concerned that you're getting TUI degree, not a Touro College degree. (Both are indicated on the diploma, from what I've heard.)

There might be other concerns, but those are a few of the major ones.

 

I like the idea, too, but wonder how it would work. Unless there is some sort of faculty/admin restricted access, the consumers would be too tempted and would participate in the discussions. The forum would aggregate the topics as desired, but the discussions would look just like the general forum discussions.

 

Is that a problem? I wouldn't have a problem with consumers and faculty discussing pedagogical issues. It would be my hope that that would happen.

I kinda thought the purpose of this forum would be for both students and faculity to interact with one another, not limit the participation. I really feel that their insight into DL will enhance our knowledge and their knowlege as well through interactive participation.

No, it is not a problem. I guess I took what you and Bill said a little too literally ("a faculty and administrators oriented forum").

 

Just wanted to voice my 2 cents and agree that MIGS should be removed. I like #7 of Dr. Gina's list as there will always be time bombs going off.

This is going to sound terrible, but just to be perfectly honest: I'm bored out of my skull with discussions of unaccredited schools, degree mills, time bombs, Liberian accreditation, et. al. I recognize that such discussions have value and meaning for a lot of folks, but it's just never been my bag, bay-bee. When I'm recommending or un-recommending new forums, this bias should probably be kept in mind.

But on the flip side, I think Degreeinfo is probably already the most active forum on the 'net in most of the above categories. From where I'm standing, the main benefit of adding a new forum--and there's nothing saying the administrators can't add more than one, or even more than ten--is that it would attract new members who aren't terribly interested in any of the old ones. That's the main advantage I see to a teaching and administration forum: there are highly active 'net forums dedicated entirely to that subject (see also: DEOS-L, AEDNet, etc.), and attracting some of that traffic here could bring in literally hundreds of new active members.

If schools like St. Regis and Kennedy-Western weren't being promoted constantly by shills, they wouldn't be discussed at all. At all.

 

As for myself, discussing those kind of things is the main reason that I read Degreeinfo every day. I can't think of anything that this group discusses that's more interesting.

To be blunt, I think that technical details about how to best navigate TESC, or about British, South African or Australian "research doctorates" are deadly dull. None of these things has any conceivable relevance to my life.

Nevertheless, it's easy to see how they might be electrifying to other people.

I'm more interested in the larger and more abstract issues: mainly in where DL, and other non-traditional forms of education (which includes unusual forms of institution, subject matter, delivery and recognition), fit into the wider scheme of education, scholarship, employment and life itself.

Yes they would. I would discuss them. Of course, nobody ever responds to my posts, so I'd be talking to myslf, but there would still be a few lonely forlorn posts about the non-accredited schools.

Given that probably more than 99% of online doctoral programs are not accredited, these things essentially ARE DL. The programs that Degreeinfo approves of are just a small statistical aberration.

 

Just to throw in 2 cents... I really agree with Bill's post.

I know for the more experienced it can be dull at times.

There is a tremendous amount of knowledge to be learned from the senior membership. I have picked up valuable information here every time I visit.

I understand some of the issues can get old, but I feel a difference can and has been made.

What I'm trying to say is that programs like the ones most discussed hardly ever change. The discussions, therefore, are centered around (a) someone with a legitimate question--rare--and (b) shills who trot out the same old crap (as Tom noted).

Seriously, what new is there to say about, oh, Kennedy-Western? What has changed since they "moved" to Wyoming, for example? Other than answering queries by newbies, it would be a once- or twice-a-year topic. It's the shilling that occupies us and fills the threads.

 

NEW FORUM

Having read the flow of posts on this one I think we could perhaps do with at least two new forums - one along the lines of unaccredited DL groups, suggested by Dr Gina (but including Knightsbridge, which will probably overtake K-W & SRU very quickly with the number of posts), and another on teaching and delivery of DL study material - including, correspondence, use of videos, internet study, etc..
I've found that one of the problems that arises with a limited number of forums - and a redundant MIGS forum - plus the massive growth of DegreeInfo, is that if you are away for a few days with no DegreeInfo access it is quite easy to miss some important points.
Good to see Dr Rich back on stream and working towards his 4,000th post.

 

Dont get confused with this kind of post. There will be people who will try to open this kind of dead issues over and over..

All I did was re-state some of the concerns discussed on this board. Your post you cite simply echoes a couple of them. These issues remain for some people. (Not me; I'm okay with Touro.)

 

Yes, I agree with you Russell.

An additional forum might also be indicated that discusses the theory that people who want additional forums (or major changes in the current ones) should rush off and establish them using their own resources.
