Curious: Is there anyone out there who has completed a graduate degree from a foreign university. I'm particulary interested in those who have received degrees from Australia and South Africa. How have your degrees been viewed by your peers, employers or post-graduate institution? Thanks
I did my masters at a place more famous for golf and a current (royal) art history student and my PhD at a British red-brick uni. In person, not DL. No real problems with acceptance; big problem with verification -- British universities don't have transcripts for graduate work, as it's all by research. Most seem to think it's a curiousity; they like my explanation why I did my master's and PhD in mediaeval history at a place that actually had some. Jon Porter (MPhil St Andrews; PhD Nottigham)
Jon, UK universities have always received acceptance here in North America. A few of my colleagues studied at Sussex and Liecester. Their degrees were accepted without any problems. Do you know if this is the same for graduate degrees earned at universities such as Deakin (Australia) or the University of South Africa?
roysavia, There was a thread I started a while back entitled "Foreign Doctorates" (if I remember correctly) that took up this issue. I think it was concluded that, at least in California, they were very accepted. I, and several other members, listed a large number of foreign doctors out of local university catalogs.
plumbdog10, I tried to find that information as well. I'm curious to see just how many people on this forum have graduate degrees from these institutions and how well were they received by their employers.
Let Englandand never forget....! I think it was John Milton who wrote (16 th century!): Let England never forget her precedence in teaching the other nations how to live! This Labout government (started by the previous Conservative govts) has dessimated the British education system! I'm not suggesting for one momen that there has been no room for change/reform but now we're adopting this North American 'standardization process there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that things are going down hill! That's not to say there are things that are not right with the Northern American system...but standardization (accrediting agencies [and the overall mediocre standards that go with it, certainly at first degree level] and the like) is not one of them! How true!?! 'telfax'
Accepted for what? for license purposes? for teaching at the university or community college? for industry jobs?. I'm presently working towards a DBA from USQ, no questions asked so far, all I have submitted is a partial transcript of studies that never raised any questions. I'm currently working as an adjunct IT instructor for colleges and universities.
Re: Re: The Value of a Foreign Degree Actually all of the above. Do you know anyone who completed their DBA as USQ? Have they found a teaching or consulting position here in America?
Probably depends on specialization A Ph.D. in French from France or a Ph.D. in German from Germany would be well accepted ! Generally, non professional degrees( academic subjects like Maths, Chemistry, etc.) seem to be accepted in universities. Not an engineering, medical, or similar profession. Check the universities calendars listing foreign academic degrees.
