But in the 15 years I've known him, he's had nothing but praise for Nevis! [IMG]

Rich Douglas, who couldn't find St. Kitts on a map if you spotted him St. Thomas, San Salvador, and Santo Domingo.

Forgive me David, but all you seem to be doing here is having a dig yourself. You have failed to offer any evidence of an offense in this thread or elsewhere. What exactly is it that irks you and how, specifically, does that irritant detract from the the focus of this thread? What precisely would you have the moderators do to the offenders and how would that offense be defined? Would irrelevant carping constitute a punishable offense? If so, some may consider you are in danger of being duly charged.
Again, if you are going to make fairly serious charges and demand moderators deliver retribution and summary censorship, you will help your case if you offer specifics rather than posture with shake of head behind banal generalities. There are many ways to make a point, and I consider your request a call to strip this forum of its diversity, richness of texture, and good old fashioned oomph!

Well, if I can be direct about it, David, I think that's a load of bull. There are undercurrents of ego, animus, naughty humor, bitchiness, fun, compassion, hate, joy, in most human interactions, and maybe especially in this medium. What you are asking is that this board be stripped of its humanity and vigor. Yet, this very post of yours exhibits many of the human failings you seek to deny expression in others.
Personally I think the danger to the board comes from precisely the kind of overbearing attitude exemplified by that statement. What possible justification can there be to compare this board with AED? There is no similarity. I invite you to sample AED now and then this forum. Where is the sameness, David? What is the danger? In what way exactly you have been mistreated. Do you mean that your request that others silence those with who you disagree either in substance or style, is alright? That's OK? But heaven forefend anyone take you to task for that request that violence be done to others? And the sort of infringement you seek is indeed violence, make no mistake.

I am appalled and stunned by this dreadful display of intolerance.

ABD Railroad mentions that the First US Secretary of the Treasury was born on St. Kitts & Nevis. Much as I would personally wish to be born in two places at the same time (my poor mother!), according to my histry book, Alexander Hamilton was actually born on Nevis.

Now let's see Dr. R. Road can make something over the fact that Aaron Burr was the son and grandson of presidents of Princeton (not RA then because there wasn't any such animal as an accreditation agency way back when) as a conspiracy against ST. Kitts & Nevis's accreditation policies

Lawrie, if my call for civility was inartful to you or others, my apologies. On other matters related to my post, we may have to agree to disagree.

That's the essence right there.

As long as posts remain reasonably on-topic, polite and coherent, I think that the moderators should take a very low profile. If somebody takes an unpopular position (defending Trinity C&U for example), then those perceived errors should be addressed by discussion, not suppression.

But if a person is interested in little else besides attacking and harassing another group participant, then I have very little tolerance.

Since noone has posed this question, for my benefit and for the benefit of others who would also like to know:

What schools, located in St Kitts and Nevis, has Dr Bear maligned that he would have not maligned had the same schools (and practices) been located, for example, in California?

The only St. Kittsian school I have called a degree mill was Eastern Caribbean University, which was fully accredited by the government of St. Kitts, but run from his home by a teacher in Smithville, Texas.

I have pointed out, in the past, that Berne has claimed (but no longer claims) accreditation from four different unrecognized agencies, two of which I regard as dreadful, and two of which I was not able to locate.

There is no comparison at the present time, as AED has become a circus. However, it was the very kind of posting seen on this forum in the past several days which began the demise of AED. So again I state my position, if the moderators deem a post to be destructive or disruptive in nature, delete it! Free speech should not guarantee the right to destroy.

If Bill's beliefs turn out to be factually accurate, but his belief system is based on intolerance, does that mean that facts are no longer facts?

Who stated or implied that the veracity of facts somehow depended on the disposition of the believer? Could you provide their name and a quote? The issues are, according to those demanding action: coherence, politeness, personal attacks, harassment. Whether or not the beliefs of the abuser are justified is irrelevant, or at least not addressed, by those proposing censorship. The only one to suggest facts might be a relevant and a mitigating factor was me. As in, if another poster's position is DEMONSTRABLY guff, claptrap, hooey, or even, as Bill would have it, bullshit, then I see no problem with calling a spade a spade. It seems your question is directed at the wrong person. . . and that's a fact.

Degreeinfo.com is not in any danger whatsoever of going down the same path as AED. Degreeinfo.com is a moderated group and AED was an unmoderated group. The moderators of this group can pull the plug on anyone at anytime.

To say that this group is in danger, or that current doings are a prelude to disaster is bunk. It would require moderators take no action of any kind in the face of any abuse by any poster. That is, the moderated group would have to become an unmoderated group.

Would you detail the specific process by which this moderated board risks destruction by virtue of the tolerance shown so far to railroad in this thread? What is your rational?

Who is destroying the board, Russell? How are they accomplishing this remarkable feat on a moderated board over which they have absolutely no control? Detail, if you will, the specific nature of destruction to date? The devil is in the detail, and so far all we have had is hand waving generality.

Who's doing the down and dirty, Russell? Surely not railroad? He can hardly manage a paragraph without revealing himself an obsessed crank. He cannot flood the board with posts since they will simply be deleted by the moderators. He cannot libel others since those posts too will be deleted. What threat does he represent?

What specifically has changed on the board that worries you? Where is the threat? Who is the threat? How are they circumventing the controllers of this board. What is the nature of this remarkable power?

Why do you want to muzzle those with whom you disagree? Who threatens you? Need those who oppose your views be silenced? Might it be that your position has more to do with bruised ego than any great concern for the health of degreeinfo.com?

Ah, Lawrie, once again we play the game of semantics. Wrestling with words and playing with pun.

Bruised Ego? Hardly! [IMG]

Threatened? By a degree mill? [IMG]

I guess the debacle of AED is still tender turf.

David,

I have to say that after making my comment about the DSM IV R, I felt bad. Indeed, I think based on the writing of the individual he/she may well have some issues. If he/she does then it is an illness or disorder which it is rather unfair to make sport of on any sort of personal level other than a critique of the ideas themselves.

Es tut mir leid! :O

LOST MESSAGE?

Yes, well, while stopping by this subject header to read North's posts, I noticed the contribution below, originally posted 05-21-2001 at or about 04:48 PM and happily ensconced in the bosom of the thread for a period exceeding 24 hours, had completely disappeared. I've had no email notice that it had been excised by degreeinfo.com censors for some contravention of protocol, and therefore assume its deletion a result of some electronic snafu. Try as I might though, comparing my memory to current content, I can find no evidence of this fate befalling any other post in this thread.

There remains, therefore, the disquieting possibility that one or more administrators (who are the only ones with the power to do so) decided simply to delete a post they did not like, and say nothing, either to the author (me) or to anyone else. If this is indeed the case, and if that clandestine act had official sanction, perhaps they will let me know, and I'll relieve them of the need for further vigilance by withdrawing permanently.

In the meantime, assuming accidental erasure, and in the interests of restoring historical integrity to the thread, I've reposted the lost text here.

Really? But one person's attack and harassment can be another's incisive point or witty riposte. Take for instance:

Bill Dayson wrote of another poster's contribution:
"That was bizarre and, in my opinion, delusional."

Certainly many might consider that a personal attack, especially the target of these cruel words. Should censors have deleted Bill's post and given him a good talking to? Perhaps he should have had posting privileges removed for a week? Nothing polite there for sure. What? The recipient deserved it? It was true? Railroad wouldn't think so. Are his feeling less important than anyone elses? Should he be treated badly because of who he is?

Let's exclude railroad - how about:

Bill Dayson wrote of another poster's contribution:
"I don't believe that you have a masters degree. Your English grammar is too poor."

Hardly polite. Not too close to the topic either. Just a flame, really.

Continuing on the same theme . . .
Bill Dayson wrote of another poster's contribution:
"I don't believe that UCLA would grant a masters degree to anyone who writes as poorly as you do. In fact, I don't believe that you are for real. I think that you are just somebody having fun jerking this discussion group's chain."

AND

"You obviously know nothing at all about education"

AND

"Bullshit."

Now let's revisit Bill's statement from this post:
"But if a person is interested in little else besides attacking and harassing another group participant, then I have very little tolerance."

Very little tolerance, except it seems, when the abuser is Bill himself.

But Bill is not alone in employing this kind of double standard. Bill may have felt justified in his use of invective. He may have BEEN justified. Then, who should judge Bill's actions and pass sentence? Should we have as little tolerance for Bill as he seems to have for others?

Isn't it hubris and humbug for a man to call for sanctions upon another, for failings he himself shares in equal measure and abundance?

I think you may be reaching a little with your critique of BillDayson, though. While he has normal human moments of exasperation or incredulity like all of us, he does not regularly, if ever, engage in bashing for the sake of bashing.

But, if you disagree with me, then I'll forfeit the argument. Man, I don't ever want you mad at me.

Apparently other personal attacks made on this board have also been lost? I decided to look for a personal attack where someone had stated that I lived in a trailer park (IIRC). I looked for it as part of an intended entertaining response to a post apparently attacking Bill Dayson. I couldn't find the old trailer park attack and quickly abandoned the fun. [IMG]

On a more serious note, may I suggest that in the future when administrator editing is deemed necessary that just the offensive text be snipped and replaced with a note saying inappropriate text deleted by adminstrator or something like that? In my opinion it will make it all appear more above board.

I don't think that it's really necessary to inform the "offending" person by email. You guys are busy enough and I don't think that additional burden is really necessary. I look at it that you guys (our dear adminstrators) are doing *US* a big favor by providing this nice haven safe from the ravages of the a.e.d. spammer.
