Northcentral University Merger with National University

The tuition is definitely a winner. Even cheaper than Liberty.

 

I didn't like Northcentral because it was a portmanteau of two complete words--not clever--and was also the name of the accrediting agency.

National University is a bit presumptuous for a private university in California. But it's held up for more than 50 years now.

 

I didn't really mind the name -- but it always reminded me of Northwestern U. in Chicago. And that was odd - because Northcentral was more ...western and Northwestern was more ...central. Perplexing, so I quit thinking about it --and now, it's finally gone away!

Will that work for my dodgy knee? Anyone know?

 

The home state of Northwestern is Illinois, which was once part of the Northwest Territory before the land became a bunch of states. When the western boundary of the US was (more or less) the Mississippi River, Illinois was definitely "northwest." The statehoods and the Louisiana Purchase kinda re-defined that.

As for how a school in Arizona could ever be considered "northcentral" well, that's where my theory about naming it after the accreditation you seek comes in.

 

The name Northcentral University could be confused with North Central University, which is a private Christian university located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. So, it makes perfect sense to use National University, which has somewhat better reputation.

 

No, it is not. I was curious because I am interested in Ph.D. in Data Science, as I have been studying Data Science through Coursera. Just spoke with the admission advisor. The program costs about $70K for everyone and about $60K for Veterans; assume no transfer credits. There are 12 credits (4 courses) allowed to be transferred over.

 

If I'm reading it right, the tuition is $442 a quarter unit, with a Bachelor's degree in English being 180 quarter units = $79,560. A Master's in Data Science is 63 quarter units = $27,846.

Oddly, the PhD programs are in semester hours, so it's not clear if the same $442 rate applies or not.

 

Oh, I was told that is nothing change except the name. Everything remains the same include tuition, scholarship, semester system, etc.

 

Google Maps still has them as Northcentral in Scottsdale. But a search on "National University" also turns up the Northcentral site, but still labeled as Northcentral.

 

I mentioned the Google Maps thing because it looks like they're staying put, despite being under National, despite giving up the name, and despite moving their accreditation to WASC.

 

I can highly recommend to you the individual who is the president of National University. I served some years back as president of the North Carolina Distance Learning Association. Dr. Mark Milliron was president of the US DLA and was an amazing leader for us. I have followed his career for many years, and have the utmost respect for him. Up until recently, Dr. Milliron was a senior administrator with Western Governors University and was the initial Chancellor of the Texas WGU for some time. He left to become president at National, and I can tell you that in my view, nobody is better than Mark! He will do fantastic work there, and it will all be done professionally. The merger is fairly new, and there may remain some loose ends to tie up, but he'll get it done!

 

I contacted NU, they were willing to re-issue my transcript from NCU under NU, but not the actual degree certificate. This was disappointing because I have had difficulty with getting the NCU doctorate equalized.

Equalized (what do you mean and in what context)? Why would the diploma play into that. NCU was regionally accredited and NU has offered to issue the transcripts under NU.

 

My thoughts too. Many people don't retain their parchments/diplomas and I've never had anyone ask for it (though I hear this is more common in Africa and the Middle East than elsewhere.)

 

I think we're assuming they are in the U.S. But their profile says Thailand. So, that's why an evaluation/equivalency report would be needed.

 

Equalization - Middle East
The diploma and transcript both are submitted to the ministry simultaneously along with an external third party certification of the credential.
It might be better to have both diploma and transcript say NU.
The Middle East in general has singled out NCU for some reason, and not proven very accepting of NCU doctorates.
Who is to say NU would have a different outcome, but I do suspect it would.
