In 2020, I made the following post about my goals for 2021:

    • Get to B1 in French
    • Get myself through Pre-Calculus
    • I'd like to read the Qur'an
    • Run a 10K
The one I achieved was reading the Qur'an in English.

    In 2023, my goals are:
    • Get to B1 in French
    • Run a 10K
    • Earn my Project Management Professional (PMP)
    • Earn 3 Salesforce certifications (Experience Cloud, Public Sector Solutions and Platform Developer 1)

Right, Dustin, but you've also achieved TWO Master's degrees in that time - Eastern MS and Quantic MBA. That's absolutely PHENOMENAL! Plus you've been there as a hubby, Dad and all-round general good guy. You the man, dude! Props, kudos and Alhamdulillah!

Thanks Johann! I have a long list of goals at any given time and sometimes the goals I achieve aren't even ones I thought about. For example, late in 2022 I got certified to audit websites for accessibility compliance, something I didn't even know was a thing until October. I'm sure I will achieve lots in 2023 even if the items are not specifically on the above list :)

I forgot to mention: All this - from a guy who also has a demanding, full-time job. Great achievements. :)

Which translation of the Qur'an did you read? Or are you fluent in Arabic? I've tried to read a couple of translations, but the ones I found were very dry and lifeless. I couldn't get through a single sura. Not surprising, because you're supposed to read it in Arabic! But I don't know Arabic and I don't need to add another language to my pile right now. :D

What level are you in French right now?

When I do goals, I like to make a top 3 goals list and focus on that.

Then I break down the goal into steps to what it will take to reach that goal.

Otherwise, it's easy to forget the goal and never get started. Or get sidetracked midway through the goal.

So, for example, in 2023, I like to get a Master's degree
Step 1: Figure out what master's degree I want.
Step: 2 Find a list of colleges and narrow it down to one.
Step 3: Apply to the college and determine a preferred start date.
Step 4: Prestudy and research classes beforehand, and come up with a game plan.
Step 5: When classes begin, set a goal of how long it will take to finish and try to make the goal.

Basically, I aim to actually accomplish everything I thought I would accomplish in 2022.

I know no Arabic though one day I'd like to! I read the Abdullah Yusuf Ali 1934 translation. It was rough!

I'd say my reading is already B1, but my other skills, especially listening are much weaker. I can pick a book off a shelf and read it no problem, but listening without subtitles is a lot more difficult, even to easy content.

I wonder if there's such a thing as a "grounded" theory of aviation? My parents had a "grounded" theory about me - when I was a teenager. Oh yeah - they put that theory into practice a couple of times. :)

In case a reader doesn't get the joke, note that "grounded theory" is a thing. It is an inductive, theory-building process and a well-recognized qualitative research method. (I'm sure you know, but for others....)

    1. Finish the MBA
    2. Get the space for the second non-profit up and operating (a lot more difficult than it sounds given some larger community issues)
    3. Apply to law school
