"(Reuters) -President Joe Biden has accepted the resignation of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Christopher Magnus, the White House said in a statement on Saturday.

The statement comes a day after U.S. media said Magnus had been asked to resign or was fired in a sign of tension within Biden's administration over a record number of migrant crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border.

"I am submitting my resignation effective immediately, but wish you and your administration the very best," Magnus said in a letter. "Thank you again for this tremendous opportunity."

In a statement to Reuters, Magnus said, "this decision provides me with the best path for advancing my commitment to professional, innovative, and community-engaged policing."

Deputy Commissioner Troy Miller will immediately take up the role of acting commissioner, Alejandro Mayorkas, homeland security secretary, who oversees the agency, said in a letter.

The number of migrants arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border has soared to record highs under Biden, a Democrat who took office in 2021, fueling attacks by Republicans who say his policies are too lenient.

Biden officials have said they aim to create a more orderly and humane immigration system, but have struggled to tackle the accompanying operational and political challenges.

A sharp rise in border arrivals of Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans has led to the record arrests of migrants driven, say experts, by problems such as poverty, violence and food insecurity to leave Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador."

But if we have "open borders", why are they being arrested?

I speculate maybe the #s of the migrants that cross the border still to high?
I'm not demonizing migrants or anything like that.
It appears that there is lack of planning to accommodate migrants.
Our daughter in a public school at the time had 60 students crammed in one classroom.
Some of my friends in LA, CA complain about overrun hospitals and difficulties to schedule routine surgeries because of very long wait time with administration commenting about being overwhelmed with undocumented migrants or just migrants.
If the borders crossings unmanageable, then the absorption of people needs to be adjusted. build or extend schools adding classes, etc,
hire more teachers, build additional hospitals or expand hospitals and personnel etc. Some states handle and budget such activities but need more and it takes time.
Newly arriving workforce also needs to be managed and absorbed, work permits provided etc.
Political pressures are a result of the issues mentioned above, even when political rivals use them.

(I was sort of making fun of those who falsely claim that Democrats are the party of open borders.)

This. Gosh darn it, it is almost like the GOP of Crooks and Thieves was not entirely honest on this issue...

The saddest part of the immigration mess that we're in is that we can't get immigration reform passed through congress. A big part of the problem, I think, is that our elected Republicans don't want it fixed. It seems that they would much rather have a festering immigration problem that they can expertly use to their own political advantage.
