There was a guy who owned a business that I was contracted to do something for, but he was really great at not holding to his contracts... unbeknownst to me. Needless to say, he closed down his business for numerous days that I was contacted for. When I went to the third party who was in charge of the contracts they basically told me that unless he refused to pay them their portion (many thousands of dollars that most people would be grateful to see a small portion of) that they basically looked the other way. So, essentially they were not too concerned about if he held up his end of the contact with me. I was livid and made a point for multiple years of regularly going to out to give a competitive edge to his main competitor and made sure they outearned him. As it turns out, I am not the only one he burned bridges with. A few years later I received pictures from the third party in charge of the contact that someone had set his business on fire and broke the guy's legs... unpaid gambling debts. Sure, he could collect the insurance, but his business was iconic and he was not going to be able to rebuild it for numerous reasons. He was also older and probably would not have had the energy to think about re-building to be competitive. I do not necessarily agree with how things went down, but I will admit to having a sense of schadenfreude when I saw the building burning. I am happy that no one else will ever get contracted to him. Screwing over others in the end cost him much more than it did anyone else, who can get contracted to other business owners with better ethics. The only real loss there was the building itself that he had already let deteriorate... very similar to Twitter. Better to let it live in the memories of those who were there during it's golden era.

Also, I had to go back to check and see if I ever got my Twitter verified. Many of my friends had, but I pretty much stopped using it about a decade ago, and also hated not being able to switch between having all posts private vs public. With that said, the verified profiles on any of the social media sites are just as much of a pain as the regular accounts. My friends, often with verified accounts, regularly have to restart new accounts for one reason or another. I have started feeling like the most reliable method to know if the account is the correct active account is to check the friend's website for social media links. The beauty of that is the ability to also simply drop a platform and link to a new one.

Schadenfreude... "Oh what a wonderful feeling...etc." (from "Oklahoma") Schadenfreude... One of Dr. Steve Levicoff's favorite words - and mine too. Nice to hear it.

Now, about your guy who had the fire etc. I got a call, did my thing - and got paid. Just work. Nothing personal. I hope there are no hard feelings. His legs heal OK? :)

I really want to "like" this while laughing, but it seems like at some point there should be an end to my schadenfreude. Trying to resist...

The fire to his business was new years eve 2011, and I got a text message with the picture just around midnight. Best January 1st ever!

The guy died in 2014 at 63 years old. His obituary is online without a photo. Only two people have left comments. There is more tragedy to his story, again to his knees/legs that required surgery. Live and learn, if you gamble... pay up.

Based on some online commentary, it seems like the business was featured on HBO at some point. I had taken photos when I was there, but my phone was stolen shortly after. It would be interesting to see the place on HBO for posterity sake, but I suspect that the video is also so old it's probably in their archives rather than online. I might be able to find some photographers that worked for older magazines that have photos of the business. I think most people will miss the heyday of the business more than the owner himself, and I regularly find myself telling stories or hearing others from the industry talking about the place. Maybe when I get to the age of retirement I will go rebuild on the ashes of the old business and hire someone to actually run the new one. Phoenix rising...

I get that, completely! That is sweet - it's real character. A joke about a really bad guy, yet you restrain yourself, because you feel even he deserves your restraint, in tragic events. My hat's off to you! You're a VERY good and special person; you made my day by NOT liking my post and writing about it! Thanks! :)

YOU ARE CORRECT. He did receive that money from the government.
And some folks say,”The government does not create jobs.”
