Hi all, I had posted here a while back about starting an MBA program at UL-Lafayette. However, I found after two classes (Accounting and Economics) that the MBA is not for me... I just can't get motivated to learn it. Perhaps that's strange because I am an executive at a tech company and it's relevant to my work, but I am just not passionate about the MBA course content. I can't imagine 2 years of it. My undergrad degree is in History, and I think I'd like to just earn my MA in History as well. Doesn't do anything for me career-wise, but I want to do it for myself. Perhaps I'll pursue a PhD in History afterwards. I've narrowed it down to two schools - Indiana University and Eastern Washington. The advantage of Eastern Washington is that the program can be completed in 9 months if you take two classes at a time. Indiana takes 20+ months to complete. However, I know IU is a good school; I know nothing about Eastern Washington or its reputation. Does anyone have any experience with online education at either school? I don't need the most prestigious school, but I do want to go somewhere decent. Cost is within a few thousand of each other, and I'm self-pay. Thank you!
If you're pursuing the degree for personal reasons, why do you care about reputation? It's an accredited school.
Well, I do also care about the quality of the University and the quality of the online programs. Plus, it could make a difference for a PhD program.
I'd personally go with Indiana University. However, I also tend to choose things that others on this forum would not. I do not care about length of time or cost whereas most here take into account the length of the program and the cost.
If the Indiana degree will be awarded by the main IU campus in Bloomington, I would definitely choose that degree. IU Bloomington’s history department is very well regarded and that reputation will definitely help you if/when you apply for PhD programs, particularly if you want to try to get into a higher ranked program. If your IU degree would be from one of the smaller campuses, there likely would be much less of an advantage to the IU degree.
Interestingly, the campus the online History degree is associated with is IU - Kokomo. That's a letdown for sure.
Decided to go with EWU. I got accepted almost immediately (the next day). The enrollment advisor said he had never seen an acceptance go so fast. (Graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 from ASU in History, so maybe that's why). I can finish in 8-9 months (45 credits) taking a full courseload and no breaks.... so that's my goal.
