Goodness! Is California beginning to see past knee jerk ideology? Gov. Newsome has had what appears to be an attack of common sense. He's looking for $1.4 billion to keep Diablo Canyon operating for another ten years. The Diablo Canyon plant generates about a tenth of all the electricity California consumes without releasing any carbon dioxide.

Um...yeah...this is a pretty smart move if he can steer it past the Progressive Left.

Still baffled that the Cali regulations didn’t keep nuclear as base load.

Simple. California gets rid of its fossil fuel plants because they're dirty and polluting and generally nasty (which coal certainly is and gas does generate carbon) and then they close their two big nuclear plants because they're, you know, nuclear?

They build ginormous wind and solar installations that don't begin to meet base load requirements and never will then they import their base load requirements from neighbor states who burn coal or gas aplenty to generate that power.

California gets to be smug about eliminating their nuke plants (which increases their total carbon foot print by about 25%) but by G-d California gets its domestic power from RENEWABLES.

    Grr.

Power will be needed for many reasons, including powering desalination plants among others.
While some predict Lanenia and possible floods in CA, my relatives tell me that talks about adding desalination plants along the CA cost line are being discussed.

Funny how people who don't know a thing about California attempt to encapsulate the most complex state in the nation with a few words.

Oh, as a Westerner born and bred, I think I know a little bit about the Golden State. I've certainly spent plenty of time there throughout my life.

You know what, though? Your comment did make me think. The very background I described just about guarantees that I have a life long love/hate relationship with California. I do know the place better than maybe you think but I don't know that I can be fair about it.

I know, Rich, but it's like eating potato chips... it's easier to do than not do. Effort is SO hard! :)

All five of the state’s largest utilities have recently released blueprints for eliminating carbon pollution. Not one recommends or even mentions renewal of Diablo Canyon’s operating license.
the 1960s-era plant isn’t designed to meet modern environmental regulations, the proposal would give it sweeping exemptions from the California Environmental Quality Act, the California Coastal Act and the state’s water cooling requirements, which limit the discharge of massive quantities of heated water into the sea.

Diablo Canyon 2, why can't you be more like Diablo Canyon 1?
