The post ate the 's' in Saskatchewan. Sorry for that.

A conservative opinion piece in the National Post questioning the purpose of Canada? Put it on the pile with thousands of pieces from the National Post in the same vein.

As far as I know, Ken Coates isn't particularly known as a conservative. I've just read his books on university education (Campus Confidential and Dream Factories). But even if he was, the listed challenges appear real.

Canada has a very important purpose. It reminds America how nice and good it could be if it tried.

We have gun control and health care. That would keep me here, even if the people weren't as great as they are - especially newcomers.
The government is pretty good at seeing that pensioners get by, as well. And as for the "aggressive" anti-climate-change accusations - I think we should be proud of what we do. Unlike some coal-fired, reeking, repressive, nightmare regime in the East, that I could name...

Canada isn't paradise - certainly not an economic one. But I'm glad to be here.

I don't think that the author is necessarily challenging the notion of Canada as a great nation to live in! I know that myself, having lived there for quite a long time. He seems to believe that the great reputation may not be maintained, if certain innovations aren't implemented. I also think that there is a certain lack of vision among current Canadian leadership and an an unhealthy emphasis on remedies to past historical injustices.

Those injustices continued into the recent past, e,g. "sixties scoop." It would be unhealthy, as I see it, NOT to place an emphasis on remedies. We can't undo the past damage, but we have to make restitution as best we can. The present Government seems to be doing much more about it than the last one. I'm OK with that.

I am okay with it as well, Johann. There is room for such remedies, but I sometimes get the impression that Canada is mired in those attempts at apology with very little effort in constructing a positive vision of the country.

Living here. I find it's mixed. I get a mostly good vibe from the Feds (Liberal) but a horrible one, from the Province. (Conservative). I may move to another Province at some point -- but I can't see me leaving the country - ever. I fear ALL Conservatives. "Timeo Graecos et dona ferentes." :)

Conservative party hacks can be dangerous, but Canada has a much more noble tradition of conservatism and Red Toryism (people like George Grant), which is miles apart from Fox News style politics. It remains a part of the Canadian success story. I wouldn't fear all its contributions.

Worst injustice - the Yankee conspiracy to kill the Avro Arrow. Oh! how I love to get older Canadian aviation buffs spun up on that one. Really they can rant for days about the Iroquois Engines. Also, One of the few nations to ever operate aircraft carriers. Sadly Canadian acquisition pros s should read "the Art of the Deal," and Perhaps consult with me before buying anymore submarines.

I have lived under Canadian "Progressive" Conservative regimes, both Federal and Provincial. No - not like Fox News - but uniformly awful. Stephen Harper, Mike Harris, and especially Doug Ford --- Brrrr! :(

Indeed, Charles. Perhaps they should have asked you first, about Sea King Helicopters, also. Remember those?

I certainly do! The SH3 was the bird of my first squadron before we transitioned to Seahawks. Fond memories.<3

You're the first person I've known who has also watched Transplant! Such a great show.
