Capitol Technology University has two new PhD programs: Engineering Management and Computer Science. As with their other doctoral programs, these are European-style doctorates that are dissertation-only. The credits are just broken down to fit the American system. You also have the option of publishing three articles in high-impact journals instead of completing a dissertation/thesis.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science | Capitol Technology University (captechu.edu)

Engineering Management (PhD) | Capitol Technology University | Capitol Technology University (captechu.edu)

Something that I've noticed about CapTech is that they start a lot of experimental programs and appear to get rid of them when not enough students enroll, so you might want to hop on any program of interest as soon as possible.

I feel they don't have enough full-time faculty in the specific degree offering. If you look at the Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence faculty list, the dean is the only one listing. I am wondering if they are using Adjunct Professors for this specific specialty.

They appear to mostly have part-time instructors. Since there are no real courses in the doctoral programs, it probably doesn't make financial sense to hire multiple full-time professors. They try to pair students with an adjunct who specializes in the area they want to research. This is their listing of full-time faculty members. They also have some adjuncts listed, but most of the adjuncts are not on there.

Capitol Technology University, a university specializing in technology that's near the Capitol? We've seen some weird names here, especially to Western ears, but I'm surprised anyone thinks that's one of them.

I don't see it. But, then again, I'm a graduate of "Union Institute and University," a loathsome moniker.

(I don't know what process they used to come up with that, but I have to think a heavy dose of groupthink was involved.)

The school started off emerging from the Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, a consortium of schools looking for ways to create alternatives in higher education. This soon became the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities (UECU), which remained the actual degree-granting institution, consisting of the PhD program (the stand-alone Union Graduate School--UGS) and bachelor's programs at host universities (the University Without Walls programs).

During this time, it was common for PhD grads to list their degree source as UGS, even though it was technically UECU.

Eventually, the actual Union dissolved, so the school changed its name to The Union Institute. Then it acquired a school in Vermont and decided to become a university. They wanted to hold onto the "Union" name, but "Union University" was already taken, so they came up with that stupid amalgam.

I really wish they'd change it. I usually tell people I graduated from The Union Institute simply because it's easier. That was the name when I enrolled, but UIU when I graduated. On paper, however, I always list it properly.

I think Capitol Technology University sounds really weird, it would be better with Capitol Institute of Technology.

I totally understand why Americans find this name strange. However, it sounds completely normal to my European ears. In many European countries, at least in continental Europe, there are universities that have a name in the local language, which literally means "Technology University" or "University of Technology". Sometimes "Technical University" is also used as a translation.

I even know of a case that is exactly the opposite of the case of the name Capitol Technology University. In 2009, what was then the University of Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Research Center merged. Since then, the newly created school has been called the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. This name has been criticized from many quarters because the German version "Karlsruher Institut für Technologie" sounds as foreign to Germans as Capitol Technology University does to Americans.

I could accept University of Washington D.C or some such. But a futile reference to Capitol is wasted. Many might argue it’s the US Capitol and it’s located in DC bla bla bla…but when you figure out the Capitol dome in Austin TX is higher than the US Capitol, then…

and that is part of my point. US university names have a certain cachet and European universities have a different name structure. A French school like HEC is well known around there by the acronym alone, while here, the university is known by its local geographic location.

Well, they property don't take the University of Washington DC because they might get sued by the University of Washington or University of D.C (District of Columbia). Maybe Rietzke University, the last name of the founder.

So I take it that Capital Community College in Hartford, Connecticut is futile/wasted for the same reason?

I don’t have a Rain Man encyclopedic knowledge of college name trivia.
