I know that to be a regular here at DI requires something of a thick skin and that as smart people we sometimes butt heads with other smart people whose beliefs conflict with ours, but it feels like this community has had an unusually large number of members fighting with each other lately. This is true even outside the Political Discussions board which can get a bit heated.

    What's going on, folks?

    Hello!

Too much stress. COVID, Ukraine, climate change - and the feeling that it can not and all will not going on that way. All that exceeds the resilience of a normal person. So, more and more people start to be extremely thin-skinned. - OK, now back to my hiatus.

    Best regards,
    Mac Juli

Honestly it seems rather quiet compared to some time periods in years past.

That's because the warden now keeps a stern eye on how new "fish" use the Prison Internet. NOBODY wants to end up in Maximum Security, nowadays. NOBODY!

Look to the root. Who launches the first personal attacks?

I agree somewhat with Mac Juli: much of it can be put down to stress. The remainder, I think, may be because certain "factions" are pushing cult-like behavior into politics. Once you have that us-vs.-them mentality, it's going to spill over into every facet of your life. You're going to take that rabid style of argument with you even when arguing for benign things like which decade had the worst fashion.

You mean there's some disagreement? I thought the '70s owned that distinction!

The 70s was bad, but so was the 80s.

Nonsense. I looked totally radical in my Ocean Pacific t-shirt and my Jams.

Yeah, Steve -you looked radical. But I looked ridiculous. I was 40-odd. That was the difference, I guess. :) Maybe I was better off in the 70s, sweating to death in my polyester double-knit leisure suit. Although now, as a newly minted career-school Fashion grad - I truly believe Rich is right - the 70s were the worst. But maybe not by all that much... :)

    It's like arguing about music.

Besides Johann's leisure suit, I'm thinking of big bells and platform shoes. I'm glad I was too poor to get caught up in that. But I did have a pair of waffle-stompers and a variety of Levi's corduroy pants....
