Quartz has a paywall, but the reason is the same as it is everywhere else in the developing world: The Chinese curry favor with policymakers in developing countries by letting them hand out full ride scholarships to people from that country.

At a more basic level, many people in wealthy countries look down on any institution in lower income countries whether they actually know the first thing about those countries or not. But as you said, while many of the flags will not be fair, life is not fair.

Wait, quartz has a paywall? That's news to me. I never noticed that (including right now), but it is of course possible that the reason happens to be my German IP address.
Unfortunately that is very true. For example, most Germans look down on Eastern European schools. However, there is one notable exception: Russia. Russian universities have a fairly high reputation, especially in the sciences. Unfortunately, the reputation of Nigerian universities is as good as nonexistent here.
