Between this and VCU's, I'm not sure how I'd feel about a trend towards collaborative doctoral projects. o_O

What a joke! Everyone and their mom will have a doctorate.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. In fact I wonder whether we're at something of a peak given that more and more people who have earned them have found the ROI to be less than they might have wished.

I found about a dozen more programs with collaborative culminating projects, but I didn't post them because it wasn't clear if they're primarily online. Virginia Commonwealth University's program has been this way for years.

If not then no worries, but if that list is still handy it would be interesting to see!

I'm in this program. Two semesters away from graduating. Out of the 10 or so students in my cohort only two decided to work together, the other 8 or so are working individually.

How’s the typical workload per class ?

In my opinion, very manageable. The typical class consists of around 30 pages of readings per week, one discussion board post due in the beginning of the week, and a reply to your classmates post due at the end of the week. In addition, there is usually one small paper due at the end of the week, typically 2-4 pages and one large paper and presentation about the paper due at the end of the week. Those papers are usually 10-15 pages and the presentation must be around 20 minutes. Not counting readings I usually spend around 2-3 hours per week on assignments, a little bit longer for the final paper/presentation.

seems like a great program only killer for me is the cost of the program

I really enjoy it and I highly recommend it to anyone. Way better than my previous two distance degrees. The cost is a killer, no denying that.
