Yes, especially at a well-ranked school such as TCNJ. Oftentimes, those who are employed as Asst. Professors with master's degrees typically work at community colleges and a few 4-year schools that offer few or no graduate degrees.

I forget the name and the school the person made it with now, but there was one man who did it with a Doctorate from Harrison Middleton University, a nationally accredited DEAC school.

I think you might mean this man -Dr. Travis Wilson - in this thread: https://www.degreeinfo.com/index.php?threads/harrison-middleton-universitys-doctor-of-arts-revisited.35078/

Prior to his HMU studies, I believe Dr. Wilson attained a Master's in Architecture - considered a terminal degree in that field. If I'm not mistaken, there was an even earlier thread that mentioned him. In that thread, I think he had a previous position at an RA design/decorating school and was a HMU D.Arts student (not yet a grad) at the time of his first mention here. The prevailing opinion in the thread then was that he had likely gained employment at the design school based on his Master's in Architecture. How much his D.Arts had to do with his current appointment - I have no idea.

Off-campus, he has some pretty interesting hobbies. You can see that here: https://www.degreeinfo.com/index.php?threads/harrison-middleton-universitys-doctor-of-arts-revisited.35078/ If a Harrison Middleton D. Arts can lead to Corvettes, BMWs and Jet travel to exotic locations - it really shows the value of a DEAC degree, doesn't it? :)

Maybe HMU should use those fancy cars and exotic places in its ads --- or maybe not. :) But they should use something. Web page looks like the mid-90s. D. Arts school could use some art. Art based on the themes of the Great Books seems appropriate...

Oh, yes. Here's the original thread that mentioned Dr. Wilson. His prev. post was at Western Kentucky U. where he taught Interior Design. It wasn't a design school per se. as I originally reported. What can I say? At least I had the right guy! :)

This thread is titled, "Non-traditional route to full-time professorship." While we've seen lots of examples, they're usually people for whom the PhD is incidental or incremental. What I haven't seen described is the route to take. What is it? How does one go from practice--public service or private sector--to a full-time academic position? Again, not just an anecdote noting that someone has done it. Instead, how is it done?

Rich, the point is obviously that one has to get a Masters in Architecture, then apply for a professor's position in Interior Design while studying for a Doctor of Arts at Harrison Middleton University. Then, boom, hired. That is how it is done. Geez. How can you miss that?

Sometimes a Doctorate or simply being in a Doctoral program can put you over the top. Since those positions are so competitive, it may be somewhat noteworthy that his Doctoral studies were with an NA-DEAC school.

Johann, you've been at this board long enough to know that ALL DEAC degrees provide that. I myself was whisked away from my Ashworth graduation ceremony in a Corvette then escorted aboard a private jet where I globetrotted with superstars. Since then, I have gone on to immense fortune and fame*. I only still show up here to give you guys a break

    *(in my own mind)

I believe one has to build connections with individuals in that specific department, or university as a whole, to do this. As is often said, it is not WHAT you know as much as WHO you know sometimes. You may disagree with it but the fact is, that is how it works quite often.

    Ha!

The inside joke here is that you actually DO have a lot of money in real life, and, it sickens me.

You're right; it's the little things we often overlook. Everyone knows that you get a professorship by already having one! What was I thinking?

I agree with this completely, except that it is WHAT you know AND WHO you know.

The clearest path for a nontraditional entry into academia is with the institution recognizing that it needs you. Not that it needs someone; you. And that comes from having working relationships wit people who can come to that conclusion. There is a huge difference between cronyism and networking.

C'mon, guys! All I was doing was replying to Learning Addict:

Learning Addict: "Wasn't there a guy who...."
Johann: Yeah, there was. Let me look -- uh, here he is!

Well, at least you treated the part about the Corvette etc. proving the value of a DEAC degree as it was intended.... a joke. Just showing off my research abilities, small as they are. Nothin' about NA degrees for or agin - except a joke. :) Slow day around here.

LOL! I sincerely apologize for not being poor and destitute the way you'd prefer me, lol.

Oof. Where did that come from?

  15. Johann

    Johann Well-Known Member

Not from me. You snipped and quoted me out of context. When I said the bit about proving the value of a DEAC degree - I was joking. Just the same as if I'd said "Let's all earn DEAC degrees so we can get cool cars!" That's, of course, ridiculous. Cars don't prove anything one way or t'other. (but I like them.)
    "
But I did NOT say that DEAC or its schools' degrees are a JOKE, as your snippet suggested. Now I know that, you know that and if someone from DEAC reads this, as they very well might, they know it too. Capisce?

Lord, what it takes to stay out of trouble here!

Hahaha. I'm sure it really wasn't just that latent NA RAGE:mad: finally boiling to the surface :D

Only one poster truly exhibits such rage. The rest who express contrary opinions do so in response to narrow or ignorant comments from people driven to exaggerate non-RA institutional accreditation.

I'm only kidding of course. I think by now everyone knows where specific regular posters stand on that subject. There have been some fly-bys who've showed up over the years to explode and then disappear. Happened to me last year which is why I finally started giving it an ID.
