A lot has occurred since I last updated so here is a present time update:

COVID-19 got to me (not illness) and ended up getting laid off from my employer along with others. The Fuqua program is a working professional program and currently my wife and I have decided we want to move to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Due to this, I applied late to SMU Cox for their full-time Master of Science in Finance and was admitted. I will be deferring the Fuqua program to 2021 and will decide then if I even want to do it based on the position I land with Cox.

I opted to go with SMU Cox because they are a powerhouse in the Dallas market since they are located right there in Dallas. I get to recruit with companies such as Goldman Sachs, Deloitte, Pwc, etc.

Congrats! Welcome to SMU! I graduated in 2010 with a Master of Science in Telecommunications from Lyle School of Engineering. Although, what I am doing now has nothing to do with my degree; however, I am still proud to be a Southern Methodist University's alumnus. #PonyUP

You know how crazy 2020 has been? Insane. Got an email from SMU that 99.9% of recruiting would be virtual and most professors requested their classes be remote instead of in-person. Due to this, if I am going to be pursuing a degree remotely, I would much rather do so at Duke. I let SMU know my decision and will be moving forward with Fuqua. Here is to hoping the next few weeks do not throw something else at me because I have been losing my mind with all this.

Also, I have an interview with A VERY LARGE company coming up, so send positive thoughts my way. A Senior Project Manager at said company who is pursuing his Executive MBA at Fuqua has been helping me with interview prep and such. Fingers crossed.

Just an update! I got enrolled in my courses today and I also got my new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Generation 4 from Fuqua! Their Digital Learning Support Team configured the laptop and pre-loaded it with all software I would need for my program. Orientation is this upcoming weekend and classes start on Monday September 7th!

Day 1 of orientation was surreal. It is almost intimidating at the level of talent I am surrounded by. I feel almost less than. Haha

The day started off with our program director, Dr. Preyas Desai going over the program, policies, expectations, etc. We then had a welcome from the head of admissions, Shari Hurbert which was followed by a 35ish minute welcome by Fuqua Dean and former GMAC Chairman, Dr. Bill Boulding. After this we broke out into our teams, which Fuqua is really known for. I am a part of a 4 person team and all of our group assignments will be completed with this team!

Circumstances changed and therefore I chose Fuqua.

Orientation wrapped up today and reading week starts on Tuesday. Orientation in a nutshell:

    1. Team Fuqua is not just a saying, it is real. Everyone wants to help everyone regardless if it is the MSQM programs or the MBA programs. Fuqua students are Fuqua students regardless of the mode of instruction.

    2. When meeting with the faculty, you can tell that they genuinely are engaged in the program. I have professors from Northwestern - Kellogg, MIT - Sloan, Stanford, etc. and they are all approachable and excited for the program.

    3. Fuqua believes that a great team will put perform a great individual and that is why we are slotted into learning teams to go through the terms with. We will learn about one another, build relationships and work on all group assignments as a team.

    4. The Career Management Center (CMC) is there to provide us career coaching, workshops, interview prep, etc. We also have access to the job board in FuquaWorld where we can sign up for events and so forth.

    5. The program is going to be very rigorous but it is going to set us up to be effective business leaders that know how to utilize data to make effective business decisions.

There is SO MUCH more that I can add to this but no one wants to read it all. If you have considered applying for the program, do it. I cannot wait to dive into my first 3 courses: Programming for Data and Visualization, Marketing and Strategy and finally, Managerial Economics.

Nice. Best of luck with the program.
Are you taking a loan for the tuition or what?
Fuqua has steep tuitions, maybe not as high as the MBA but that was one deterrent for me so far...

I think most are taking loans, as am I. They offer small merit-based scholarships ($5,000ish). So you either pay the tuition out of pocket or take out loans. I have yet to find someone who is employer sponsored although there may be a couple.

Fuqua MBA tuition runs about $200,000 for the entirety of the program. My tuition runs $66,000 for the entirety of the program.

Finished up Week 2 of the program and I must say, the quality of professors at Duke University, and Fuqua in specific, is AMAZING. This morning, I had Managerial Economics lecture with Professor Ryan McDevitt and Strategy with Professor Scott Rockart. Highly intelligent professors that made class engaging and enjoyable. Since then, I have been working on my coding skills for my Programming for Data Analytics and Visualization course. It has been like reading hieroglyphics but it is slowly becoming more similar to English. Lol

I wrote my first computer program (COBOL) 42 years ago, in 1978 - and programming is STILL like hieroglyphics. You mean it isn't supposed to be? :(

You aim high, TEKMAN. Said to be the oldest business school in the world, by at least one author. Established 1819. If you go for the Doctorate, you have an opportunity to earn an additional degree - a state-recognized Executive Master's in Management Research, when you publish your first (of three required) papers. But why do they have to call these "Global Executive Ph.Ds?" Makes them sound (to me) like abridged quick-version degrees, which they'd better not be for $75K. This is a Grande Ecole, for goodness' sakes. That means something.

Very expensive -- very exclusive. To me, a plain PhD outshines a Global Executive anything, though. They should work on that - but I'm sure they won't do it on my say-so.

I wish you well with this program, too. Quite a wall you'll have. Lots of work!

...and lots of residencies (at least 3) in France and elsewhere, it appears. Bonne chance avec votre français! (Good luck with your French!) :)

You're like a kid in a candy store. Weren't you pursuing the Ph.D. in Public Admin at Liberty?

What do you hope to gain from a 75k "Executive" Ph.D.? I understand that ESCP is nicely ranked and has triple accreditation. However, will this degree carry more weight than the other DL Ph.Ds in the U.S.?

Minor point, here. Very minor: Triple accreditation - yes. But not "Triple Crown" as it's known, primarily in Europe. That's EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB. ESCP has two, but not AMBA. Only about 2% of business schools world-wide have all 3. Still a great school - but I don't like the "Executive" degree title either.

Like an "Executive Bentley" if there were such a thing. No grandiose addition needed - IF it's the real thing. And if it isn't .... there's no help for it.

Programming jokes, just for you, Josh.

Q: What's the object-oriented way to become wealthy?
    A: Inheritance.

Q: Why did the programmer quit his job?
A: Because he didn't get arrays.
