I am NOT considering a second doctorate. However, I recently came across someone who is pursuing their DBA (UMGC) after earning their Ph.D. (UNM). https://globalminded.org/team_member/don-trahan-jr/ or
    https://www.linkedin.com/in/don-trahan-jr-ph-d-b233113a

I also saw another who was announcing their promotion to a tenured associate professor, who has a DM from Phoenix and a Ph.D. from Iowa State. https://rhtm.utk.edu/people/james-williams/

Do you or someone you know have two doctorates (Ph.D., DBA, Ed.D., JD, MD, etc.)? What do you think is the rationale? Would you pursue two doctoral degrees?

Feel free to post any public examples, i.e. websites.

I always have thought it was strange for someone to have two doctorates but I know of atleast two people who have post-docs.. I have a couple of older friends of mine who did a doctorate and a post-doc (not two doctorates but essentially the same here in the USA). I have another Facebook and LinkedIn friend who is pursing his second doctorate. I have also seen several online profiles with two doctorates. Several of these profiles that have two doctorates or pursuing a second one went on to do a second PhD at Universidad de Central Nicuraga because of the very inexpensive price and the flexible time spent on the degree since it comes from an autonomous university with no additional coursework aside the dissertation if you already have a doctorate or come in with advanced standing.

These type of doctorates are likely used by many as top-up degrees. People usually either get them for personal development, a profile boost for entrepreneurship, consulting etc., or maybe to teach additional subjects at the college level as a professional adjunct. I don't see it being a huge benefit outside of this however.

One is application-based the other is research-based

The J.D. really isn't a doctorate (and I am not a doctor). Even so, I do know a fellow with the J.D. and M.D. and an MBA for good measure. I've worked with at least two women who held Ph.Ds and J.D.s. I'm pretty familiar with a college professor who earned a liberal arts Ph.D. but is on the cusp of finishing a Ph.D. in computer science. The thing isn't that rare.

I know a guy who has SIX doctorates - all unverifiable. He runs a degree mill.

The J.D. is a doctorate. It is not a research doctorate like the Ph.D. or professional doctorate like the Ed.D., but it is a first-professional doctorate like the MD, PharmD, DPT, etc.

One of my Liberty professors has a Ph.D. and a J.D. both from Nova Southeastern.

I need to do more research on the DM. Still not sure of it's relevance when there is a PhD and a DBA. I feel the DM is a "third wheel" type of doctoral degree.

I think if someone wants to earn one, two or three doctorates, more power to them. Just my opinion

What does this mean, a "third wheel" type of doctoral degree?

The DM is a professional doctorate, not unlike the DBA, but narrower in focus, just as an MS in Management would be narrower than an MBA.

I did not say it was not legitimate. I just said it is in a weird place **to me**. I am aware it is a narrower focus but who other than the University of Phoenix offers it?

My LinkedIn/Facebook friend is working on his second doctorate with plans to finish this year and he already has five Masters. He is considering doing a 6th Masters from Universidad Isabel I as well. I thought I looked crazy with a Certificate of Proficiency, 3 Associates (I only name one on profiles), 1 Bachelors, 1 Masters, and a Graduate Certificate. I thought about doing a Dual Masters from ENEB / Universidad Isabel 1. I also thought about doing a Masters (upgrade) from my unaccredited Master of Religious Studies to a nationally DEAC accredited Master of Theological Studies with just 6 more elective graduate classes (18 hours) at Nations University. Doing all of this would put me at 4 Masters and if I decided to finish all of them in a short time, I would be paying less than $1000.

Did I say anything about legitimate? I just asked what you meant by "third wheel," and then noted that there was no material difference between a DBA and a DM (except for content).

As for how common it is, it appears to be quite beyond UoP alone. A simple web search turned up dozens (or more? I quit looking) of schools offering the degree. It also has its own page on Wikipedia, an indication that some people are talking about it and researching it. The DM appears to be a thing.

So what does a "third wheel" degree mean? It's not a term I've heard in this field. But hey, I've only been involved in distance education since 1978, so I might have missed it.

I have an EdD (which was considered a research degree when I got it) and I am working toward a PhD. My reasoning for the second doctorate is two fold:
-My life situation changed and I find myself medically retired from my previous career. Now I will be fully dependent on an academic career that was previously just a side gig.
-My situation is a bit unique because I was in law enforcement. The EdD has a nexus to any public safety field if you aim your research appropriately. So I relied on that to get me in the door. But, the market is changing and many schools are now saying you need a doctorate specifically in CJ or whatever public safety field applies. EdD with research in CJ is seemingly less and less appealing.

So, increasingly specific vacancy requirements combined with a newfound dependence on teaching college classes have joined forces to put me back into the mix again working on another doctorate.

That is great. I did not search mainly because it is not a degree that interest me so I could really care less if it is offered at every University in America or not.

A "third wheel" degree is something I came up with myself, on the fly, in an effort to describe my thoughts on it. I was not trying to be technical. It is a degree I feel is kind of in the shadows and out of place...kind of like the "third wheel" when it comes to relationships.

I'm not exactly sure what is up with all the nit-picking that has began to occur in this forum. I know I have only been here since 2018 but over the past few months there has been an increase in scrutiny, disagreements and so forth. You can have your feelings on the Doctor of Management degree and I can have mine. Does not hurt you, does not hurt me.

    Hello!

Being a businessman rather than a scholar, I do not think that a second doctorate has much value in the superficial and cruel business world.

    Best regards,

I think it depends on the situation. If you have a professional Doctorate, and now you want to continue for a Research Doctorate for professorship purposes. Another scenario is when you earned a Doctorate degree from lower-ranking/ no ranking institution, and now you have a chance to earn another Doctorate from a prestigious school. I think if you have two or more degrees from each level is too many. I am pursuing a third Master's degree because it is an MBA, but I still think it is too many.

Schools offering the DM (D.Mgt). Online.
    -UoP
    -UMGC
    -CTU

CTU offers concentration in criminal justice, homeland security, and a bunch of other areas. The two faculty members I know of at Liberty with DMs have a homeland security concentration.

    On-campus
    Thomas Jefferson University
    Webster University

I'm sure there are a few others.
