    The whole point Stuart is making in both his OpEd and the interview is that over the past few decades, the Republican party has been steadily working to mainstream what are actually extreme views to the detriment of traditional "conservative" positions. Now, those views ARE the mainstream views, and have to a degree defined what "conservatism" is in today's political discourse.
