I have been and will continue to believe that not every student can be a distance student and not every teacher can be an effective distance teacher. I have had many teachers that maybe they are good in person but are terrible at handling a distance class.

I really feel for the students that are going to get adversely caught up in all of this. They signed up for an on-campus class and now are forced into distance learning with a teacher that may or may not be able to communicate the material effectively. Then if they fail a class that they were passing prior to all of this wouldn't they have a pretty good argument for getting a grade changed? On the other hand maybe they can't manage time and without the structure of a class they have to go to they don't follow the material, but then teacher passes them anyway. Ugly no matter how you look at it. Maybe Berea has it right? I didn't see in the article, anyone know if the students got a refund for the classes?

I am reminded of all the conversations on this board of the stigma that exists in the world of academia re online education. How many times has it been said that online degrees are not respected in the world of academia? How many times have articles been posted where university professors have explicitly stated they believe it's inferior? And now all these same professors are stuck teaching online courses. Is there any reason to believe they will do a good job? They're intelligent, that's easy enough to say. They're probably even relatively adept with various software systems. But what about that basic attitude toward online learning?

My wife got an email last night (professor at Lindsey Wilson College in KY) and they are asking for feedback from all the professors as to the difficulty of going distance learning for all classes.

She doesn't have a problem with it as she has already taught all of her classes online previously, but some other professors are making a big stink of it.

I know that all the games in the CIAC (Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference) have been suspended. Lots of disappointed kids.

Academic conferences are shutting down across the nation. People's responses have been pretty entertaining. I have three of them on my schedule for this Spring, so far none of them have been cancelled yet. I anticipate that most of them will though.

It's getting easier to name schools that will still be holding classes than those that won't. It's spreading like a wave through American higher education.

But March Madness without fans?? 'Goodness!' is right. It will be one of those historic things.

University of Tennessee at Martin just gave its students 1 day notice that classes are cancelled tomorrow, and that they have until 5pm tomorrow to vacate campus and their dorms.. They are tentatively not to return until after Easter.. classes will be delivered online for the foreseeable future..

At this point, everything is simply going to be on the verge of shutting down. No point in even keeping track anymore. My twin six year olds even came home from school today talking about it and were scared. Not thrilled that a video about the crisis was shown to kindergartners. Although, it may have been appropriate to dispel anxiety with some children.
