Hi. Long time no see... I'm looking for some recent information on General Psychology Masters Degrees with Industrial/Organization Psychology and Substance Abuse Counseling being secondary interests. My wife, the CPA, has me on a limited budget. I have found American Public University at $370 per graduate unit and NCU at $666.66 per unit. I look at the UNISA website (dizzying and circular hierarchy of links) but as I recall from the past, I was unable to make heads or tails of exactly that things cost. Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Making the list is the easy part. The hard part is trying to figure out if the degree (whatever one catches your interest) will qualify you for state licensure. I'm told that lots of places will simply not allow it.

So you've got South Africa, Malaysia and India as the three cheapest places, in general. There are not that many in South Africa, a few in Malaysia and a million in India. No one goes to India except maybe Amity (and I don't think they have Psych degrees).

Hello Dave, I'm just making sure and asking - Is this degree for your wife or yourself? Hmm, from the looks of things, the cheap/easy/fast for General Psychology or I/O Psychology would be from the Competency Based Degree providers. Capella/Walden are the cheapest of them, if you or the wife can finish the degree in a term or two.

Essentially, Walden Tempo Learning has a special 50% off tuition for the life of the program. $1330 (Half of $2660) for a 3 month term, if you finish in 6 months (yes, it's possible - very likely) you can get it for a whopping $2660 - a RA MS General Psychology OR I/O Psychology Degree.

For Capella, in addition to Gen Psych & I/O Psych, they have several Flexpath options. It's $2800 for a 3 month term, so if you finish in 6 months, that's only $5600 for a "different" area of Psychology if Gen or I/O isn't your fancy. I mean, here's two cheap RA MS Psychology degrees for under $6 grand/6 months.

Let me see if I understand this . . . You already have a master's and two doctorates (one from Trident, and the other one from the unaccredited and now-defunct California Pacific). You're already licensed or certified, presumably, as a substance abuse counselor (unless you're practicing without a license, which is always a possibility). And based on what you describe, if you earn the master's for which you're allegedly looking, it is not likely to qualify you as a licensed psychologist. I won't even touch the notion that most of your professional experience in so-called higher education has been with for-profits. (All of this is in Dave's LinkedIn page at https://www.linkedin.com/in/dave-w-397a4/.)

Therefore, on your latest search, I'm rather tempted to ask, in a cordial way, of course... are you nuckin' futs? :D

Great info. I'm going to check out Walden tomorrow.

Capella's minimum is 11k plus. They limit you to 2 courses per 12-week subscription.

What is the purpose of the degree? Self gratification? Promotion? Teaching?

My suggestion will all depend on what you intend to utilize the degree for.

Any chance Walden plans to extend its tempo learning model into their forensic psychology degree?

Hi. The degree is for me. Licensure is not an issue... I am already certified as a substance abuse counselor for the State of California, Nationally, and in 40 countries. The primary reason for the Masters Degree in Psychology degree is for promotion and salary increase within an agency context. Without an accredited (or foreign equivalent) masters degree in a behavioral health related discipline, it is difficult to be classified as a team leader or a manager. I teach graduate management students and I am a consultant. Steve, to answer your question: I also earned an AA in Psychology, so I have done all the undergraduate prerequisites; that was as a result of taking all the substance abuse counseling courses. The course content also has value to me as I turn my dissertation into some sort of self-help book: https://pqdtopen.proquest.com/doc/1906281562.html?FMT=ABS

    Thanks,

    Dave

Amity has some interesting online degrees, but psychology and behavioral sciences are not included.

Yes, thanks... these both look like good values. I'll check them out along with any others that come to mind. Both of these are more prestigious than APU, yet are more reasonabley priced. The Walden Tempo Option looks interesting but I have occasional eye problems, so I don't think that would work out. Thanks again!

If Walden isn't your cup of tea, have you checked Capella? I think they are just 12 week terms for $2800. On the webpage it says you can do two courses a term, but if you finish fast, you can take an extra two. So, it all depends on how fast the person can do their work, just the like Walden program. I don't know what the difference is between these two, but both are RA and the requirements are pretty much the same. But again, Walden has that 50% off right now, so I would edge closer to them. Update: I did a chat, they confirmed the price for Capella...

Thanks for the info... I can't start right away, so that might rule out Walden. American Public University still seems like a good option with respect to affordability, content, and structure.
