I am surprise how little discussion goes on here about the fleecing of veteran. Liberty seems to genuinely offer benefits to veterans and first responders, almost all the other institutions seem like just marketing gimmicks. “The FTC’s findings should shock every patriotic American," she said. “Enough is enough. It's time to stop the fleecing of America’s veterans and service members by predatory colleges.”

I’m not sure how you can label this case a “fleecing of veterans.”

I’m also not sure how you can be so sure Liberty does not “fleece” veterans.

I’m also not sure how you can be sure only Liberty refrains from “fleecing veterans.”

I’ve been a veteran for all of my adult life. I’ve yet to be “fleeced,” or anything close to it. Perhaps I’ve been lucky.

My apology. I have read many news stories about the fleecing of veterans by for-profits in the USA . I take your word for it that the stories are all hogwash. I mentioned Liberty because they have substantial real savings for veterans and first responders, plus 10% saving if you are Canadian. Does Liberty fleeces veterans, maybe I don’t know. Liberty should have an FTC investigation like Phoenix.
The quote was from the article. “The FTC’s findings should shock every patriotic American," she said. “Enough is enough. It's time to stop the fleecing of America’s veterans and service members by predatory colleges.”

Actually, those are your words. I said nothing of the kind. Not even close. You're creating a strawman argument. I'd rather not be a part of it.

Your quote is just someone's unsupported opinion and hardly proves anything.

Of course , you are correct. Actually, I am truly excited about the strawman argument. Coming from you, it makes me even happier . Not that I am mocking you, but you obviously know what is a strawman argument and i don't. A teachable moment. Now I do my research on making strawman arguments.

So was I to say there is no evidence that veterans in the USA have been fleeced by for-profit institutions. I can say that but I think I will be wrong. I maybe now second guessing myself, but I am sure I have read on many occasions veterans were targeted by many less than outstanding institutions.

Here is quote that basically said the same thing as I did. “For-profit colleges in general have been criticized for preying on veterans and low-income students, promising bright job prospects. But they continue to post high student loan default rates and below-average graduation rates.” CNN Money.

I read through all that stuff on straw man. I still don’t see the connection. In the end, I think my opinion is pure and genuine. There are many stories out there of veterans being taken advantage of by less than stellar organizations. It does seems wrong to me. I think an article out of Pittsburgh will be my final say. I like the blue collar attitude there.

There is no question that some veterans, somewhere, have been fleeced (whatever that means) by some number of organizations. Many non-veterans have also been fleeced. My only objection to your statement that "many veterans have been fleeced" is that it's too general. It's like saying "Sometimes it rains." It brings the discussion nowhere. The only schools mentioned in the article you cited were the Corinthian colleges which have all now been closed for years.

I think I see where this is going like so many issues on DI. A subtle tone is being set that we don’t criticize for-profits for ripping off veterans. I am assuming many here have been benefiting from for-profits in the past and present. One just had to do a search and there are numerous new articles saying the same thing. I am black so I am an expert on all issues black, many of those veterans that were fleeced were blacks and minorities.

    The irony, isn’t this strawmanish?

“The veterans we serve are understandably angry when they discover that the very consumer fraud they faced at a predatory school is one the V.A. knew about but approved for G.I. Bill benefits anyway,” said Carrie Wofford of Veterans Education Success, a nonprofit group. Follow the money, we should do the same for many on DI.

AMU has this posted on its site:*To minimize out-of-pocket costs, active-duty service members their spouse/dependents, Guard members, and Reservists receive a tuition grant that will cap undergraduate, master's degree, and graduate certificate tuition at $250/credit hour. In addition, a new master's-level book grant will be available to active-duty service members , their spouse/dependents, Guard members, and Reservists, providing no-cost textbooks and ebooks for master’s-level courses.
I think $250 has a significant meaning . Institutions that have implemented the $250 max per credit a long time ago should be acknowledged.

My guess it will never happened on DI unless there are some benefits .

As you well know, there is a forum on DI dedicated specifically to military-related education topics. If you think something needs more attention then you are welcome to post on that subject. If you're going to go on and on about how important it is then please don't leave it up to other people to handle it.
