    Flo to everyone on here from a long time reader who had finally registered an account.

    I finished my MA in Music with OU last year 16 years after graduating with BA(Hons) in Contemporary Arts (Music) at MMU in the UK. Having planned to go the whole way through the academic tree I sadly detoured in to school teaching in order to earn a living as I got married for the first time straight after graduating. A divorce, second marriage and two kids later I picked up where I left off.

    Day job is a split between being a music exam board qualifications director, music publisher and piano teachers as well as fitting in freelance stuff with an emphasis English Music. The plan is a doctorate focusing on a couple of obscure English composers but I'm having to balance my time and subject against my research areas being very niche and self funding which is obviously rather limiting.

    Looking forward to interacting with you all.

    Welcome to DI. That having been said . . .

    OU . . . Ohio University? University of Oklahoma (which is also generally abbreviated OU)? Oregon University? Oshkosh University? (Yes, there really is a city called Oshkosh - it's in Wisconsin, and has a very cool air museum.) Oxford University? University of Oakland? Oceanside? Okinawa? Ontario? Have I made my point? Well, just in case I haven't . . .

    MMU . . . Manchester Metropolitan University? Mount Mercy University? Multiple Myeloma University? Mount Mansfield Union University? Ad infinitum, ad nauseam . . .

    I love the rest of the paragraph, incidentally . . . It's like a plot line for Mr. Holland's Opus. (The rest of you can look it up on Wikipedia.)

    Now there is a film I have seen in a long time! It was one I loved at the time and I can still identify with large parts of it, even if from a distance these days.

    Point taken, working in the UK qualifications sector I automatically go by abbreviations. So here goes:

    OU = Open University (not Oxford as I have had to correct people more than once)
    MMU = Manchester Metropolitan University.
    The day job is at VCM = Victoria College of Music and Drama, London. Once a popular teaching college in London back in the 1890-1940s, it is now solely an awarding body.

    A healthy dose of caustic wit is very appreciated as well.

    Ah . . . I hadn't even thought of Open University. Where I'm from, OU usually means Ohio University, although in recent threads here on DI, it has generally referred to the University of Oklahoma. I would imagine that the bourgeois who come from Oxford would simply use the traditional term Oxon.

    MMU was obvious, but on a forum primarily peopled by Yanks,* the need to use full names rather than abbreviations is made even stronger, especially when referring to UK schools.
    ______________
    * That means Americans, kiddies.
