I plan to enroll in one of AMU/APUs masters programs and I am having some difficulty in deciding which to pursue. I have already asked what the workload is for the MA in History. Can anyone tell me what the workload is like in the MBA program as far as reading assignments, papers, and exams? I appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thanks.

I started the MBA program in April. So far I have taken 2 classes - Intro to Finance and Research Methods. The courses for the MBA program are all 8 week courses, no 16 week option available (on the other hand, the History program courses are all 16 weeks - no 8 week option available except in 2 or 3 electives). I have only been taking one at a time but in September I am going to attempt 2 and see how that goes.

Research Methods required one posting a week on the discussion board to a instructor question and 2 follow up postings to other students, a written assignment (library exercise, literature review, article review etc.), 2-3 chapters a week of reading, and a final research proposal. The research proposal is very easy to put together by the end of the course because the assignments each week are different elements of it. You basically put all your assignments together and do a little editing. No exams.

Intro to Finance - 2 chapters of reading per week, 1 assignment of 5 questions, 1 discussion board posting and 2 follow ups. Mid-term exam 25 questions multiple choice and a final research paper 8-12 pages - instructor chosen topic.

    Hope this helps.

Was the Intro to Finance exam proctored?

Thanks very much for the good info!

No proctored exams in any class that I know of. I also took several undergrad courses with them and there were no proctored exams. The exams are usually just short multiple choice questions. The final projects/papers count for a higher score and some courses don't give exams at all.

I took 9 credits of grad-level finance and my classes all followed the format that Etania describes. But one instructor waived the final. The finals were online, not proctored and open book.

    Etania and mbaonline,

What do you think about the quality of the Finance course-work?

Finance is one of the areas that I'm interested in at APU.

Thanks very much (again) for the feedback!

    Ok

I thought that the syllabi were well-designed and the instructors helpful. They are not as active or involved in the discussion board as my instructors were at Regis and completely different than the mode of instruction at UoPx, where instructors are required to post and post often. Again, there is not as much interaction between classmates on the discussion board. I took the advanced Finance classes as I'd already taken Corporate Finance, Analyzing Financial Statements and Portfolio Management classes at Regis. So I found the APU/AMU classes to be very easy, but that may be because of my 20+ years in finance and the fact that it's my core area. YMMV

Hope it works for you. From what I found, the price can't be beat.

I am finishing my third class which is Corporate Finance which was summarized earlier by another poster. The workload is very manageable. The other posters pretty much summed up a few of the other courses as well. I am taking the Marketing Management Class starting in Sept., and it consists of a 2 page summary of 3-4 chapters per week, Weekly Discussion board post and 1 response to a classmates post, 1 midterm and 1 final, one 12-15 page research paper (topic of your choice) a news article review (1st week only), and a one page class reflection paper.

If it is allowed, I can post or attach the syllabi of the majority of the core MBA courses. Let me know if your interested.

As you said, if that is allowed, I would like to see them. Thanks.

    Corporate Finance Class

I am attempting to finish my second/last class in corporate finance. I am struggling with the end of chapter excel homework. We are using Brealey concise edition, what advice or recommendations do you offer to assist me to get through the class. I am a Masters in management major and this is my last finance class.
    Thanks

    Hi Carol,

Let me look into this class. I took it sometime in 2009 so I'll have to check if we used the same book. I'll get back to you ASAP. Until then, hang in there.

I know this is a very old post. I have a question for APUS MBA's, how is APUS MBA reputation among corporate and recruiters? Do recruiters look at you or just ignore it because this is an online degree?

Hello NewMBA2017. I graduated back in 2011 and back then, I had a difficult time finding a new job. I landed my current job as an Organizational Development Specialist in HR because of the connections I made with people in my new field. That was in 2014. I did have a few recruiters message me on LinkedIn for some contract work and some entry level B2B sales positions. I feel it really depends on the position you are looking for and the type and length of related work experience you have.

I am assuming you graduated with your MBA from APUS based on your username. Congratulations. Let me know how I can help with your job search.

The Syallbi for past courses are available on the APUS website. I graduated from APUS with an MS in accounting. If you are looking for your degree to get you sought after by corporate recruiters, then you picked the wrong school. There are very few MBAs online that will do that. Networking is key to those positions and if you have an MBA from a prestigious school with a deep network, that will help.
